Received more expensive item than the one I ordered

So I placed an order for an item at an online shop (graphics card), with the price of £275, and I just received another graphics card, with the value of around £900.

In the package there's a receipt, and it's for the item that I intended to buy (not the one that I received). I payed with Paypal, and it's charged £275.

What are my rights? Do I have to contact the store and return the product or shall I just wait until they contact me?

Imagine it had happened the opposite way and there is your answer. If you had paid £900 and they sent you the £275 one would you be happy at losing the difference?

I'm getting sick of these threads. Find some moral fibre and get on the phone to them and point out their mistake, how would you like it if the reverse happened?

    Don't judge so quickly.

The reverse has happened to me in the past, and I've been !!!!ed over. They made me send the other one back from my own pocket and didn't refund the money, then had to wait out for 2 weeks and they did nothing, and after chasing them for a further 2 weeks I was refunded for the original cost (they didn't refund the cost of sending the item back). I just called it a day because I was sick of dealing with them and spending hours on the phone every day was costing me more than the actual delivery.

So forgive me if I'm not enthusiastic about putting myself in that situation again. If they call me and arrange a collection, send me my own order in advance, I will be happy to cooperate and swap this one with that. If the expectation is that I (who paid for premium delivery to get my item quickly), should now chase them, then pay from my own pocket to send this over, and then wait days/weeks until they send me my original item, sorry, I'm not willing to do that unless I'm under a legal obligation.

So why use the same company if they were so bad last time?

You have a statutory duty to take care of the goods. They have 6 years (in england and wales) to chase you for the return of the item or its value. At the end of that period the goods are still technically theirs - they just lose the right to take legal action against you.

They are responsible for any costs associated with it. It should be collected at your convenience and their expense. You should also be reimbursed the difference between premium delivery and standard if they have failed to provide that service. You could also ask for a partial refund on your own order for the trouble/being honest - there is no entitlement to this but worst they could say is no.

Keep your communications as brief and to the point as possible, dont include anything that isnt strictly necessary as it just means your points get buried.

Paid for premium delivery of xyz on x date totalling x amount. X date xyz was delivered valued around x amount.

You think they've made a mistake and are requesting they collect the incorrect goods and deliver the correct ones as soon as reasonably possible. You expect reimbursement for difference between premium and standard delivery and you also think that a goodwill gesture of 10% discount would be appropriate in the circumstances.

Pick up the phone and call them. They may say Keep It.

If not, the worst that can happen is they send you a prepaid envelope to return it and you get the right one in a few days.

Worth also imagining if the card goes faulty at some point.. You wouldn't be able to return it as it is not the one they sold to you as far as they are concerned.
  • If the invoice state they sent you the one you ordered then i would keep it as will find it hard to work out who they sent it to. I tried to be honest in past and cause nothing but trouble..

3 years ago orderd new TV, got 2 but only billed for one... invoice sign by me saying one TV delivered. i Just listed the other on ebay and till this day still nothing. If they ask for it they need to prove i have and recieved both. Also ti people saying what if they made a misake and i brought 900 quid graphic card but got a 255.. well phone them and they correct the order for you.. they normally do.
  • Gave them a call. They were p i s s e d off that I didn't call on the same day. They didn't agree to send my original order before they receive this one. They arranged a collection for tomorrow (via a non-premium 2-3 days service) that can happen between 8am and 7pm, agreed to refund my delivery cost, and told me that they will send the item I originally ordered once they receive and process this card, which can take up to 2 working days. Also, if I want that to get to me quickly, I still need to pay for premium delivery, otherwise it will be shipped via a 3-5 working days service.

I asked for a partial refund or a gift certificate for my good will, they laughed it off and said their "manager" won't approve. So not only I'm not getting my original item until at least early next week, I'm not even given a discount or anything for this inconvenience. So much for karma and good will.

    I totally regret calling.
