This is one from the girl I sit next to at work - she found out she had been paying mobile phone insurance each month on a phone she no longer had....for FIVE years!!

It has given us hours of amusement in the office! (although the first thing I did was point her to this site!)

  • My biggest waste of money was a sports car. It was an impulse buy at a car auction. I had gone looking for something sensible and got carried away because it looked so gorgeous.
The sports car turned out to be a bottomless-money-pit. In the 2 years I had it, it was either guzzling petrol or racking up bills on repairs. I can't tell you the relief I felt when I finally admitted defeat and bought a Fiat Panda instead.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in. :D

    my ex, about £15,000.

He gone now and so is my credit rating.

I can relate to that alright - i might be up sh*t creek credit rating and debt wise from what my ex left me with but it was worth every penny to get rid of the loser!

Aside from that it was probably recently my PSP - I hardly used it - so I sold it to fund me and my OH's anniversary trip to Dublin!

    Hi all you money savers

My biggest waste of money was my ex too! After an 8 year relationship he finished with me then after a few months asked me to go back with him. After a suitable length of time had passed he suggested "we" buy a caravan so we could go away at weekends and asked me for a "loan" of £5000. AND...you guessed it!!!!!! He then disappeared with the loan. Having just lost my mum as well, you can imagine that at the time I was heartbroken.

BUT....Actually in retrospect it was the best £5k I ever spent!
When he left I had a mortgage of £62k and other debts of £5k (the money I had loaned to lend him). I am now mortgage free with savings of £25k.

I am really happy now with a new job, new house and a new life and NO emotional turmoil. It just shows how things somehow turn out for the best.

£86 for two cups of tea. We booked into the worst hotel in Colchester. Having travelled over 200 miles to get there we made a cup of tea each but decided the place was so disgusting we couldn't stay. It was filthy and smelled of the ensuite toilet, it was thick with dust and a there was significant drop to the top of the fire escape ladder. I had asked specifically and we were told there was a car park. What they didn't tell us was that we couldn't use it during the day, it belonged to a couple of firms who let the hotel use it at night. During the day we were expected to park in a multi storey car park two streets away. We were charged for one night for a single and a double room and although I tried to stop the payment the Visa company weren't having it. They said it was a quality issue. I ended up having to pay for two family rooms in another hotel for our accommodation in addition to the original expense as it was all they had available at short notice. All we got for my £86 was two cups of tea.

    I think I'm in love :D
Good for you Ellie :T, well done.

It does make life so much more pleasurable when you haven't got the worry of debts hanging around your neck, & better still when you don't have emotional stress on top of that!
  • Ex's and mates for me aswell, its one ex which screwed me the most though, never mind though, I also was really into my mountin biking, went every day, had a good bike, got talked into upgrading it by a mate, ended up paying over a grand, never use it now, scared to break it :D

  • MS Windows was my greatest waste. I bought 2 copies of XP pro and Office (to be legal) £800. Whilst I like the software the price tag crippled me. Now I use Ubuntu Linux, which has very good Office and other software but most importantly IS ALL FREE. Good community support and I am now converted. Thankfully before Vista came out. Now I even give away computers with a full up to date Linux OS and no risk of Windows Genuine Advantage issues.

Another waste was not reading my car insurance reminder. I changed car insurance firm when my renewal was up and disregarded the old firms mail. Sadly there is a statutory law that car insurance via direct debit must be continued by the vendor unless otherwise instructed by the car owner. so my car was insured twice one year £340 wasted.

Time is really my greatest waste as I never really use it productively. so all the secondary wasters come into play from trawling internet forums (hehe!) to daytime TV, to sorting out filing and getting stuck on reminiscence. If I could be paid for daydreaming, I would be richer than Bill Gates :D
All my software is completely free, even the operating system. Look at Linux :)
