According to the BBC article, the migration will be complete "mid 2015", given the usual competency of these departments, I will worry if I'm not on the database in mid 2020.

The BBC article is about the paper counterpart to the photo licence, not the old style paper driving licence.

Your 'Driver Number' is the same - on a photo licence, old pink paper or green paper one. It shouldn't matter what type of licence you hold, your details should already be on the driving licence database.

If you get stopped and do not produce your licence, you may not simply get a producer. If you don't appear on the database, having the car seized is quite possible.

And insurance companies won't need to see your licence, they will be able to check the database on-line.............

Alright, you've convinced me. Once more I get to sort out someone else's incompetence. (If you want a job done properly....)

There is a nice thread at
    https://gds.blog.gov.uk/2014/10/07/a-new-way-to-view-your-driving-licence-info-online/
Where a few people have commented that they aren't on. I quite like the comments asking why the comments about not being on are ignored.

Looks like it isn't just my licence docket in that shoebox!

I have used the DVLA email to send an enquiry, as suggested by the DVLA. However, out of the hundreds of suggested enquiries to choose from, this isn't one of them, so obviously, the possibility that someones licence details cannot be retrieved hasn't even occured to them.

If I get no joy in a couple of weeks, I'll devote an afternoon at work to 'phoning them (won't that be fun, took a couple of hours to get a V5 sent out that they had "forgotten to send" last time.)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

^ I suspect you've currently mislaid your licence but do have copies if they need any details.

When updating to the new photo licence you don't have to send back your old paper one. Just tick the box next to 'Missing or lost'.

There is one big advantage of having one of the new licences. You can use it instead of a passport to enter any EU country that is signed up to the Shengen Treaty. Be aware though that you will need to fill out a form to use it to get back into the UK as we are not signed up (up).

Have you a link to this?

When did you last try it?

You can't travel on a DL - it needs to be an ID Card - and as we in the UK made a pig's ear of IDs a short while back - we don't have ID Cards.

DLs don't show the holder's nationality so it can't be used as a travel document - in the EU or anywhere else.

Coming back into the UK without a passport is possible but it's a time consuming affair - but yes a DL would be acceptable enough for the UK Border Agency/Force to run a check with DVLA.

There is also the entry and exit checks that were introduced just last week - I doubt very much that a DL would be acceptable, as it's not a travel document alternative to a passport.

UK isn't in the Schengen Agreement so it won't work for the UK, but would be acceptable for say a flight between Greece and Spain.

A Driving Licence is acceptable ID by UK or Republic of Ireland citizens for travel within the Common Travel Area - UK, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey & Guernsey.

Have you tried doing that? I think it's not acceptable.

Driving licences, post, bank or tax cards are not accepted as valid travel documents or proof of identity.

    That quote comes from here:

    http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/entry-exit/eu-citizen/index_en.htm

As Rover Driver has said a DL will be accepted as ID for the Common Travel Area - but that's a different historical issue.
