    1. It IS broken, since there's no central record of your right to drive, nor indeed whether it's even your licence. It's only an easily forged piece of paper.
    2. £1.40 per year is hardly "through the nose", especially not given the benefits, which include having a very handy proof of ID for many regular purposes.
    3. The UK was about the last major country to not have photographic driver ID - but even we got that sorted 17 years ago...

But, apart from that, what did a photocard licence ever do for us...?

I still have mine, and I have no intention of getting one of these new fangled ones either
So have I, until next year anyway then I will be forced to get a new fangled one.

And as for it not being a
"proper"? It's a format that ceased to be used decades ago. The "proper" licence for the last seventeen years is the one you refuse to have.
I can look mine up on the DVLA site using my licence number.

You can, so you have some of the benefits - centralised record etc - already. Facade can't, so doesn't.

If Facade's wallet gets lost or damaged, he's going to have fun'n'games proving those entitlements that he's so determined to protect.

Not even that much... It's £14.

I've just done mine the form the DVLA post you when the photo is due to expire says £20 and that is the amount I've paid.

Old paper licences are still valid despite what is is said here by some until you have a change of details or reach 70.

Paranaoia has nothing to do with it.
Why should I pay, and keep on paying through the nose every few years, to replace something that isn't broken? ;)

This is a moneysaving forum after all :D
Its possible insurers will start checking license details online. If you don't exist it may cause you problems.

I had planned to change mine at the reduced £14 price but as it is still £20 for me so i've decided not to. As you said, this is mse :D

It's not "possible" - it's happening this year. And it's the reason the counterpart's going.

And, yes, old licences that don't show on the online check may well cause problems.

The £20 figure is an old one, before last October.

Exactly when did the DVLA send you the form?

Hi, I have just ran my details though the link you've provided, and I aren't on their db. I have moved a couple of times and only have only just found my paper licence. I have also changed my name since.... am I better off ringing DVLA or will the PO sort it for me? Thanks

That's very strange as they reduced the price to £14 for online renewals and £17 for postal renewals last October.
