Disappointing Upgrade options from EE/T-Mobile

Am in the last month of my contract with T-Mobile, so called up 150 and was offered £42pm with £100 up front for Unlimited Texts, Minutes and 2gig of data for the Samsung Galaxy S6. The CS person said that was to match my usage.

I said to her that I send less than 100 texts a month and even less minutes than that. The next option down was £36.99pm for 1000 texts, minutes & 1gig of data, with £100 upfront for the phone.

Said I'd cancel my contract as I can get a better deal through Tesco as a new customer.

Went through to Cancellations, who said they could reduce the upfront cost of the phone to £60, but they can't reduce anything any further. Explained about Tesco's offer, and she said that as they piggy back O2, they can get away with reduced costs.

I then said that when I took out the S4 on this contract 2 years ago, the S4 was brand new and I got it for £26pm and £100 upfront. Her excuse was that the S6 costs more now than the S4 did 2 years ago, and also that the S4 only came with 16gb of internal memory (I pointed out that it was expandable).

When I said I'll have to cancel and go elsewhere, she wasn't interested in keeping me as a customer. Real real shame.

Anyone else had disappointing S6 upgrade options from EE?

Why would EE subsidise a top phone for a low-usage customer that they are unlikely to make any profit from?

Tesco, like all providers, do spend money on attracting new customers.

The point is that loyalty costs nothing. Shop around and vote with your feet every time your minimum term ends.

Which you didn't mention in your first post... If EE is the only signal option, then look at one of the MVNO's running on EE: for example the new BT SIM only deal, if you are a BT customer, or Virgin Mobile?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

But they want the new S6 (as there old phone is no longer good enough ;)).

The choice is, accept what EE offer and get the phone you want or don't. Upgrades are never going to be as competitive as hunting out new contracts.

But they were happy to do so with a similar to phone in 2013. So why change the boundary now.

I'll probably stick with my phone and get a cheap sim only deal from giffgaff.

Maybe they felt you were of more value back then? Maybe the entire industry has changed in 2 years?

It's a long time ago, things change.

I'm tmobile and close to the end of my contract too. Looking at either an upgrade or a new contract has been really disappointing - they all seem to be flogging iPhone or iPhone like contracts at £30-£40 a month.

I'm clearly not the sort of customer anyone wants as I have minimal data usage. It's looking seriously like keeping my old phone and going sim only.

Without wishing to upset anybody, a lot of people (not just here) need to move away from the 'sense of entitlement' and the feeling that loyalty is or should be rewarded. It isn't. Businesses exist to make money, not to keep people happy.

I wouldn't expect a supermarket to reduce the price of items for me just because I'm a regular shopper. If the price is more than I'm willing to pay, I go elsewhere.
