Not just for UK travel - but couchsurfing has a lot of UK hosts - not only in popular city break cities: (eg: Bath, Cambridge, York, London, Edinburgh) but also in some more remote and scenic places too. If you want to meet local people when you travel (who can often be a great source of advice and tips too) then it might be something of interest? www.couchsurfing.com

Wells Next The Sea, north Norfolk for a lovely, safe seaside holiday with a wide range of accommodation for all tastes and purses from camping and caravanning up.
The Inn at Whitewell, Forest of Boland, my favourite B&B in the whole of the UK. Not the cheapest, but good value for what it is.
Nirvana Spa, Sindlesham, Berks. Very good value day spa. Have a membership here and its like going on holiday for a day a month. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I start a cardboard box for food to take, tins of tuna, beans, crackers, coffee, tea. We don't take loads though, because its more fun going shopping to the nearest large supermarket when we get there.
We usually take a couple of games as well...
When the kids were young, we used to take a couple of boxes of Ice Pops to freeze, so they could have as many as they wanted, saved buying expensive lollies.
Another + point was I gave the kids some money for their holidays, maybe £10 each, my parents might give them £5 each, and sometimes my sister. This was their holiday spending, when that was gone, they didn't usually ask for more-this money was for what they fancied in shops etc, junk mostly!
We always had a great laugh.[/quote]
Beautifully evocative post, takes me right back to my childhood. I didn't think any kid in the UK had this kind of amazing experience anymore. Devoid of all the CRAP corporations have to offer for a week. Just you and your family. And yes, a great laugh.
DAMMIT what's up with the "quote" post here?0 -
We just visited the Haven caravan site in Gt Yarmouth. Obviously cos of the bad weather it wasn't packed out as normal.
Very expensive though as after every kids show they were promoting autograph books, badges, chocolate, cuddly toys, cd & dvds of the show/characters.
As a single parent on a tight budget I felt guilty looking at the long line of kids & parents who were forking out for the stuff. But as my 7yr old said "Mum, how can "Bradley Bear" write an autograph, he can't hold a pen with those big paws? Someone must be doing it for him and thats cheating"
But one of the highlights of the windy raining caravan holiday was playing all the card games - Donkey, Happy families, snap etc.......:TJ-Lo samples were fab:smileyhea CK, Joop, Britney

This year we (son and me) stayed at the Center for Alternative Technology in Powys, Wales.

They have a Timber Frame Self-Build House with 5 rooms. It is self catering and you have to share facilities with the occupants of the other rooms. It was very reasonably priced and we met some really lovely people. The only down side was the house is right in the middle of the site and during the day when the tourists are about it can feel a little like you are in a goldfish bowl.
The area is fantastic and it is within easy reach of some amazing beaches and towns.
Unfortunately they only rent rooms out for 4 weeks a year as the rest of the time they use the space for attendees of the various courses they run.If you see someone without a smile.Give them yours :A

We stayed at the nearest Haven site to Edinburgh. It has been one of my best ever holidays, we were both relly nervous wondering if the kids aged 2 and 4 would enjoy the Fringe, they LOVED it ,there was so much street entertainment we didn't need to go to any of the shows, although next year we will definatley try and c 1 show. The bus in only cost a pound , and eating out was very reasonable the parks also had entertainment so you could take a picnic in. My kids have never been so well entertained at such little cost. The Scottish couldn't of been more welcoming!!!!!!!!!!0

Hey Sarah, we (DD & I) went up to Edinburgh as well for the fringe. We were there from the 16th -18th and stayed at http://terringlenguesthouse.co.uk/ - the loveliest B&B ever and only 10mins away from the town centre.DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0
