We've got a bit of chocolate left, but I've bagged it up for the food bank rather than open it.

I really should do this, I think its really admirable supporting the foodbank in such a way. I know it will be well received. When I worked in supported housing it was nice to have the little treats in the parcels. The basics like pasta, cheap toiletries were well used and practical but it was nice when service users also got something a little bit special.

  • End of the hols.

Had a lovely day, went to Abbey House museum and then to soft play.

The local Wacky Warehouse were doing passes for a month for £10 for up to four children. As it is £3.50 per child for one session, I invested thinking I'd never use it again. (I'm not a fan of soft play, and my seven year old is getting a bit old for it.) However, I've used the pass three times, so definitely good value.

£7 spent today on entrance to the museum and £1 on a sweeping brush.

Back at work, first week done, only five weeks until half term.

I've already clocked in 57 hours this week, this is before my shift at the supermarket. Only 45 of it was physically in school, but I've spent another 12 on marking related activities.

I absolutely love my job, and its been a great week, but the hours are long. I'm starting to look at ways to work smarter. My friend gave up physio to run pilates classes and earns the same for much much fewer hours.

For example she, on average, sees 4 private physio clients a week, in her own home £100 (for two hours work.) She then runs three pilates classes from a local hall. (Unsure what she pays for the hall hire, but know she got it free for two months initially. (It was to encourage the use of the community space.) She has 8 customers paying £7 each for the lessons. She reckons she makes £150 a week from this 3 hours work.

She doesn't have any marketing costs as does it free via facebook. So in four hours a week she is making £250. She mentioned me tutoring, I literally don't have time with the day job, but seriously looking at reducing my hours at work to fit in tutoring.

I'm happy to give you any pointers I can re tuition. Generally speaking I make what my take home was as an NQT except for August where I generally earn very little if anything at all. I need to work 8 hours a week to pay our basic overheads but often do about 12. I get enquiries reasonably often for KS2 tuition but I tend to knock it back unless it's year 6 so there's definite demand out there for tuition for younger kids. I'm also often asked of I know any maths tutors and I don't so do let me know if you want to discuss things further

  • Trying to eat out of my freezer, took a strange vegetable rice potion to work today. (It wasn't actually a potion, but tasted like one:rotfl:)

I spent £60 at the supermarket last week which is just ridiculous. So need to get by on top ups this week. Spent £7.50 at M&S tonight on yellow stickered items. Did really well to avoid the bakery, and cream cake section. They had the cutest mini cream cake selections in little cardboard carry cases. Even at £1 I had to resist, no one else in this house would eat them - so I'd end up with them all.

DD1s dance class for the next six weeks needed paying for £38.60 - more than usual as it included a £8 show fee, suppose its worth it, as its at an actual theatre.

You're doing really well. Even though £60 is a lot for groceries for you, it's still way less than most families seem to spend. Lots of people seem to spend £100+, no idea what they spend it all on.

As a fellow teacher, I feel your pain with the long hours. I only work 0.4 (2 days) as wanted to spend more time with my 2 young pre schoolers while they're still small. It's nice having the days with them BUT I work 8.10-5.50 at school including all through lunch and breaks, and usually 2 evenings at home, this week already worked 3 evenings :( Your friend seemed to have a good plan. I can't honestly see myself sticking out teaching forever as life's too short to work all these hours although supply teaching is appealing as it's not much less money but no class responsibility, assessments, parents evenings etc. seems to be plenty of supply around at my school alone.

I do a bit of tutoring a couple of days a week, it's just a shame that it needs to be done after school hours. Not an issue now, but when my oldest child starts school in September I want to spend time with her after she gets home from school.
Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams :)
  • Been a busy couple of weeks, but plodding on.

Had a really great night out at the theatre night with DD1 and her Brownie pack. DDs ticket was free, but they had 4 spare for parents and I managed to be get one so a really cheap night.

I really do love a panto as well, it was fabulous!

£6.15 train fare to get there.
£7.48 on interval treats. Was astronomical for 2 magnum icecreams and two bottles of water - but overall a great time had by all.

Back on the bandwagon today, spent £2.60 at the corner shop on essential groceries.

Food budget back on track, £35 last week, £30 this week.
