Hello: I just tried to open a Cash ISA with Trading 212 online, but all the security questions have frightened me off! They wanted my National Insurance Number and Birthdate, but when they wanted me to enable the camera on my laptop to take a picture of my Driver's Licence, front and back, that felt too much like a criminal scam! Can anyone please tell me if all this is normal? Am I overreacting to think it might be identity theft?  Thank you, Arnold
Yes this is normal. All ISA providers must record your National Insurance number, all financial institutions must obtain your date of birth, and there is also a regulatory requirement for firms to ensure they have confirmed the identity of the account holder. This can be by a combination of electronic verification and receipt of documents in the post, or use of a service that matches photo ID to a video feed of the customer. Several providers use the latter as it is a higher standard of proof (could be compared to going into a branch with ID).
  • I opened an easy access ISA with Trading 212 and got an interest rate of 5.1%. They quickly dropped that as soon as the Bank of England reduced interest rates and it now pays 4.9%. I see they are now advertising 5.16% for new users. Whist I think 4.9% is still good for an easy access ISA, I feel they lure you in with a great rate then drop it as soon as they have the chance, so just be aware.

Their website suggests the rate for new customers is 4.9%.

Oh, so it's via an affiliate link. So "they" are not advertising 5.16% for new users, MSE is.

I suppose many variables but I wonder what holds some ISA transfers up?

recently I’ve done paragon to shawbrook two days
    zopa to Coventry three days
coventry to Zopa a week so far and still not done

surely it is the current ISA provider that’s slows the transfers? Once the new provider has submitted the request it then on the current provider

Can be the new provider being slow in submitting the request to the current provider, submitting it to the wrong provider, or failing to match the incoming funds to the customers account. All have been identified as being responsible for slowing down transfers in individual cases discussed here.

I've had all sorts of problems transferring from Paragon to T212. In the end managed to get 2 of 3 ISAs moved over so far. It all seems to stem from their interpretation of prior year/current year subscriptions and whether they are all or partial transfers. For the moment, and after numerous message exchanges, I've put third transfer on ice until I understand exactly what the problem is. Can't say either party has been particularly helpful.
