Do you live near a Waitrose?

News has broken all over Social media that there is one opening near us to replace the current mid range supermarket.

The renters are up in arms while the homeowners are dancing in the streets. The council is commissioning special bunting and I think there is a day of celebration planned when it opens sponsored by the local estate agents.

I should mention that I can't really afford to shop in Waitrose, but like most homeowners I am quite interested in this:

I do feel sorry for the renters though. Not only do they get a shop they can't afford it will just make their dreams of buying more unrealisable.

Waitrose can be expensive but also competitive so always worth a look at offers and reductions.

No wonder they were so up in arms about Lidl opening in Berkhamsted... It has a Waitrose and that will just spoil the effect.

I am pleased to live in an area that has Waitrose and Lidl, not to mention a small Sainsburys and an M&S food. And it certainly isn't just the poor who queue up for bargains in Lidl.

There were some people ranting on the local Facebook thread that it should have been a Poundland. They didn't get many likes oddly enough.

We had a Waitrose open up five minutes walk from me about a year ago, replacing the Co-op, which was a little tired it has to be said. Initially a Morrisons was due to be there, but they seem to be in all sorts of trouble (building of the one in the centre of Southampton has also ground to a halt).

I like Waitrose for the free coffee, but would never do my main shop there. Some things are stupidly expensive:

    When looking for a Mothers' Day present with one of my boys the other week a small box of Thorntons chocolates was £7, whereas the newsagent over the road was selling the same chocolates for £5 for a box twice the size;

My wife once paid £1.45 for four free-range eggs (I didn't even know that you could buy eggs in boxes of four!), whereas I usually get six free-range eggs in Iceland for £1 (so Waitrose are more than twice as expensive); and

You can get beer and wine considerably cheaper elsewhere.

Against that, their essential range is reasonably priced and we sometimes go to get cheap pastries in the evening when they are marked down.

Where I live is considered an affluent part of Fareham Borough, but having a Waitrose doesn't bother me, but I think the Tory council see it as something of a coup.
'I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.' (Bob Monkhouse).

    Sky? Believe in better.

Note: win, draw or lose (not 'loose' - opposite of tight!)

Are there not more local choices, I live in Dorking, which is only a small town, but we have a Sainsburys, M&S, Waitrose, Lidl and a Tesco express. Not to mention that you can also shop via the internet of course.

    ...

    2.3 miles. Does that count?

P.S. Including a photograph of a Waitrose in your OP is rather redundant. We all know what a Waitrose store looks like.:)

3.0 miles way from Lidl. Or 4.0 miles if you stop off at Waitrose on the way there.

Free coffee, free newspapers, and they send you coupons. Plus it is an education in itself to see what kind of really stupid prices the middle classes will pay for stuff.:)

Five minutes walk from us, well worth sending the butler down for the bargains at closing time.
