Meetup is a website. It's basically lots of local social groups. It seems to cover most areas so if you have a search in your area there's bound to be something going on. It's not a dating site (although of course some people will meet partners there).
In my small town there is a general social group (through which I've been for coffee, meals, a book group, theatre trips, seen local bands), a live music group, a walking group, a photography group, a backgammon group, etc. You get the idea
Definitely worth a look to get you out of the house and meeting new people.
