If anybody were taking me out in that I'd want to see proficiency certificates from this country and to have seen them in action, behaving reasonably (while I stay on the shore watching).

I'd take it as an invitation to sit on it, berthed ... and drink my beer, eat my sandwiches, on the deck only.

    :)

You don't get ME out in open water!

    Hey !!

I have my Canadian Boating Operator card !

(Truthfully, I had to take the test before I was allowed to take the speedboat out. You can get fined out there if you don't have it).

...but I know my limits !

We used to have a boat here in Conwy but it was nothing more than a floating caravan really.

    A sailing question Maggie.

Sis and her hubby have bought a 40 foot yacht ; it's over in Vancouver. She wants us to go out for a holiday, and says we can borrow it.

Err, I have only sailed the Hobie Cat 16 we have over there, and that was on a pretty empty lake.

DW isn't exactly confident on our ability. I'm guessing this boat business needs experience?

Ummm, the Seabirds are only 20 foot. So half as long as your sister's yacht.

I just looked up the Hobie Cat 16 on wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobie_16

But I think sailing catamarans and other boats are different. Plus I wouldn't want to sail a 40 foot boat with just the two of us (thinking back to when I could sail of course!) as that's kind of big, and how much sail are you going to need to cope with? Does it have a motor?

OH is more into reading about boats than me, so he has plenty of theoretical experience on top of his real experience - hope that makes sense!

Depends a lot on the boat of course. I wouldn't recommend less than 3 on a Seabird unless experienced with the Class. OH and I sailed from me being totally inexperienced but he was VERY experienced from childhood plus other sailing too. Mind you, Seabirds are kinda weird - you wouldn't want to sail one unless you'd been sailing on one. Designed in 1898, so a bit different to modern yachts!

40 foot is very big to me. No way I would try sail a boat that big with OH (if I could still sail). Maybe I'm just a wimp.

Do you have a name for the kind of boat it is? Not *just* being nosey, can make a difference to how easy to sail.

OH recommends this book about sailing from Vancouver to Juneau.

(Can't use the usual linky stuff for some reason?)

    Thanks for that. :)

All i know is the boat is called Amitey. I suspect that's just the boats name.

I'm not really a sailing person. If sis and her hubby come along then I'm sure they will take us out.

I don't really know Vancouver that well.

It depends... Your sister says you can borrow it, but for what? To sleep on for a couple of nights, whilst moored? That should be pretty safe unless you're a somnambulist. To sail it round a lake or sheltered bay? To sail it offshore?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    Is that a day off?

How many national days off do Aussies get?
I know they get the Queen's birthday - which seems unfair to me as we don't get that.

Happy Australia Day Gen, and also to Mrs Gen and the Generalissimos!
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

In order from the start of the year, in Sydney we get:

    1. New Year
    2. Australia Day
    3. Good Friday
    4. Easter Monday
    5. ANZAC Day
    6. Queen's Birthday
    7. Labour Day
    8. Christmas Day
    9. Boxing Day

In addition, I work in a financial institution so get the Bank Holiday off too which is in August.

In Victoria (Melbourne) they also get a day off for the day before the AFL Grand Final and a day off for the Melbourne Cup (horse race).

Thanks zag. I suspect this is South Outer Greater Herts!

Apropos of nothing, Victorians are known in NSW as Mexicans as they are from south of the border.
