Lovely to see lir and lemonjelly back on the thread.

Hope you find the silver lining, lemonjelly. I'm sure there is one.

Edit: jealous of the diy class Yorkie, wish there was something like that around here.

    Lir, welcome back!

And lj, sorry to hear that news. :(

And PN I'm afraid the drop in evening classes is part of the same sorry short-sighted saga that's affecting the whole post-school sector.

We have evening classes at the school over the road but they are not cheap - 90 for the term of about 10 lessons.

Not sure how that compares to computer dating?
    I think....

What I found, about 10 years ago, was that the Govt were "funding" Adult Education (aka literacy/numeracy/basic IT) only, so evening classes went up to about £300/year.... and then every local outlet/College/other venue offered the adult literacy classes because they could get funding.

As they were all offering the classes and there weren't enough people to attend them, if anybody booked onto one it'd be cancelled ....and all the venues wasted money continually advertising them with leaflets and local newspaper adverts. Very little actual training was going on at all....

Meanwhile, evening classes stopped as the prices were so high that nobody could afford to go.

I see education as the antidote to ignorance, and feel we ration it at our society's peril.

If we think education's too expensive wait till we have to pay for ignorance.:o

Hello LJ, you are giving up a job that was making you miserable. A cause for :j:j:j

Register with temp agencies to find out how buyant the temp market is and when the time comes to give yourself opportunities to try different sorts of employers.

My neice was made redundant from an FE College in the summer ( two colleges merging with some job losses). She has found a new job, terms and conditions not as good but pay about the same.

To add onto the book saga, he still hasn't ordered the book, Josh needs it now (they are already working from it), when Josh asked about it tonight, ex hubby said he will try to order it tomorrow night....with delivery some time next week! He needs it this week not next week!

I've ordered it and it will arrive with him on Friday, Josh will have the cash instead from his father, supposedly to pay for the book but I am funding that instead.

In better news, I have signed up for a cupcake decorating class, no idea how my hands are going to cope with doing it but it's a bit of fun and gets me out amongst 'normal' people for a couple of hours.

It is only the one class but it should be fun and the person running it did Josh and James' birthday cake last year...she is a Facebook success story, she started off advertising her cakes on a local Facebook selling page, got so many orders she was able to do something more organised and then finally was able to open up her own shop about 18 months ago.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Re adult learning... I think a lot of this is going online. We're being trained in terms of the offering in libraries and we're taking on some of the IT basics. We also have an online driving theory test. We also have courses that can be taken with a library card, such as languages. Then there are MOOCs. However that doesn't help with practical hands on courses or ones that result in a qualification. The government loves putting stuff online as the unit cost drops spectacularly.

I'm not convinced that successive governments have understood adult education, though that's more of a question for jelly or zag.
