Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The more I think about it, the more I think I'd turn it down, whether I intended to say anything or not. It wouldn't smell right to me. It would feel like he was persuading me to blackmail him. But I have no experience of the way things are done in that world, of course.
ETA This post was based on a misunderstanding. I thought sadistic boss himself was offering to pay fir to keep quiet. I have now discovered (having read posts on the next page) that it is the firm who are proposing to compensate fir for what he has been through, and would like him not to make a song and dance about it. I think I would personally feel happier turning down the "kind offer".The more I think about it, the more I think I'd turn it down, whether I intended to say anything or not.
