I suspect the drink got him.

The reports of his death that I've read have been very coy about how he died. That's not normally the case except when the circumstances of the death might cause stress or embarrassment to the family.

We know he was a heavy drinker and struggled with it. A good friend (very good friend) died in his early 40s of the same.

I'm happy to be corrected but everything I've read about death from alcoholism is that the decline, if it comes, can be sudden and rapid.

Comments on twitter asking people to remember he has a 10 year old son, so to post with discretion - though I wouldn't expect a 10 year old to be on twitter - does suggest embarrassing causes.

In other glum news, two carriages on a ride crashed into each other at Alton Towers and there are casualties. Photos online containing lots of blood :(

10 year olds sometimes have friends who hear things that are said by teenagers/adults who may be reading twitter, for example, and then repeat them at school.

For reasons that will be obvious to NPT regulars, the thing that strikes me hardest is that this is a boy whose parents split up when he was 5, and whose dad died when he was 10. The marriage breakup plus parental death combo is really hard on children. :(
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I feel intensely sorry for him. He had just lost his job, and he had lost his father. Plus, in the midst of an election campaign, he probably had no chance to grieve properly for his father. We heard that he had gone off the booze, but it would hardly be surprising if this put him back on again. I am certainly not going to suggest that I would not have done exactly the same as him in the same circumstances.

And, what is more, it would not surprise me in the slightest if he had deliberately caused his death, as I could imagine doing the same perhaps in those circumstances. It's such a waste of a very talented guy, far more talented than me, at least.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
