Sadly, I shall have to cut down a cherry tree that has taken root in the foundations of our patio. If I could work out how to get it out in one piece, you would be welcome to it.

This, as I have been taught it, is the method for moving ground grown trees. It does not guarantee success, but gives a shot. I'm positive some trees have better success than others, I just do not know which. :o

First know that the 'tap roots' of a tree are not important to its survival 'only' its stability. The 'important' roots are the little 'drinky 'roots around the tree.

This understood dig a large trench around the tree, so the tree becomes isolated, a castle with its own moat. Give it some time to recover. Here I have read different things. My guess is it depend on the soil and care taking.

The aim is to allow the sides of the tree root ball to develop a new reinvigorated network of 'drinky' roots, so when placed in new home they are ready to seek sources of water and nutrition and work HARD.

    Say a year.

The next year, get a digger / mini digger to complete extraction of root ball at place tree on van and high tail it to new home ( dormant if possible!) and replant, supporting tree because its lost its stabilising roots.

We are toying with doing this with lilacs here. They are not such great lilacs, as in their form, but we both adore lilacs, and they lived here first, and they have good height.

I underestimate it completely I'm afraid.

Doesn't it need a Simon Cowl figure to deride each act; an Amanda Holden figure to cry at each gut wrenching story behind the travails each contestant had to go through to compete (e.g selling their shoes for the bus money); a David Walliams figure to camp it up with innuendos for each act.

It needs big red crosses and buzzers to vote someone off after 10s.

There needs to be a bootcamp stage where stories will emanate suggesting that the Irish contestant has been a lothario bedding anyone they can.

Yeah, baby, "Big Brother EuroVision Talent, Get me outta here on Ice" :)

To clarify, I do not underestimate viewing numbers. Its impossible to underestimate talent or integrity, but it can still be a hoot. Its not that I despise Eurovision, I do not, I just don't rate it highly either. I don't rate lots highly I can still think is a hoot occasionally, however, if I felt that over all it was well, the opposite of lifting standards socially, musically, culturally...I question its bbc worthiness despite its 'hootiness'.

It's gotta be pretty cheap TV. Does the host country still pay most/all the costs? That's great news for the Brits :D

€3,9m of fees were paid this year (€100k per country participating), with (IIRC) about 50% going to the host broadcaster, and the rest paying the EBU's expenses.

The cost to each broadcaster is relatively cheap for what they're getting out of it, as one hour of what you see on TV costs a minimum of £25000 usually.

The cost here is about €12000 per hour, plus whatever fee is paid to whoever commentates.

This morning on the news a vox pop comment about children's tv is that 'it's too education, nothing just for fun'.

Really??? There seems to me to be plenty of stuff on children's TV that has no discernible educational value whatsoever.

(Also, I agree with you that "educational" and "fun" should not be seen as mutually exclusive.)
It's not fair fun if somebody's cheating...

1977. Silver Jubilee. Street party. Kids' races. Hopping race.
I hopped all the way along the track.
A boy went faster than me because he ran most of it, only hopping occasionally.
It was "just a bit of fun" and cheating didn't matter.
    He got the medal.
I wept bitterly, but it made no difference.
That was supposed to be fun for me??
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I bought/froze a pack of sausages sometime ago and they've been mocking me in the freezer all this time. Well, I figured I have to cook them.... but didn't want a "sausage casserole". So decided to take a punt and give just sausages/onions a go. Raw and nothing else. I figured it'd either work or fail and at least I'd know if you can just cook saus/onions alone in it ..... and if it failed I could lob in a tin of tomatoes and other stuff and end up with a casserole anyway ... but still know.

I won't buy any sausages for it in the future unless I specifically aim to make a specific dish in the SC with them, or if these turn out fine. I'll stick to mince and chicken cubes for ease.

I hope these turn out fine for you. I find sausages a useful thing to have in the freezer. Six did supper and breakfast this weekend. When I multi pack buy I also break one packet down into twos occasionally. A sausage or two can, like a piece of bacon or two, can really cheer up a meal. I know the oven is off limits, is the hob too? I'm sorry, I cannot remember.

Yes, really. I was really annoyed. I don't see kids tv to make evaluation, but doubted it was true. I agree some things should be for fostering joy and imagination....but see that as educational too.

E.g. Heartbeat....I had no art bone in me, but thought it was a great programme. I was not allowed to watch a lot of kids tv though...so accept th at it was always so, I just did not see it. :D

I also agree with the cheating thing, and poor sportsman ship.

But also with silvercar. I think it is not fun, nor to be encouraged to play poorly with others, but that we should learn that not all see it that way. :(.

One of the things we can do is play the game with others but by our own standards ( I am guessing this is what we do now .......to a certain degree,..) this is very noble and British and perfect manners. :). We could stop playing and do something else, ( not terribly dignified, but in do think the money would be better spent on different arts funding.....I certainly am not going to play the education or hospitals card though ;))

It might be that linking talent to education might be a good opportunity though, for students in different areas of performing arts and the technical areas behind them.

( edit removed stuff about personal interpretation of 'art' and opinion on this matter, because its not important....)

    Don't quote, will delete.

In other news I've not mentioned, mother's had two more falls this weekend and is sporting a bruise. The home now want to have an assessment of needs (although we're unsure at the moment what that will entail etc).

If it's what my Dad had it's stuff like can she cook a meal/pick a can of beans from a can of dog food dress/wash herself. Climb stairs, lock the door behind her.

I know they aren't cheap, but would an induction hob be worth investing in Pastures? Can't remember whether we've discussed before, so apologies if we have. Something like this:

I also meant to ask how it is now you've got your new furniture in.

It'll be about what's best with care/all the falls I'm guessing .... an opportunity for them to increase the rent :)

Excellent. She can't just be left to keep falling. It's good that the home is being proactive about this.

It's wonderful that she hasn't broken anything. I guess that proves she doesn't have osteoporosis, at least.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
