My DVD drive seems to have been shocked into compliance by the threat of being replaced. It has woken up this morning in a penitent mood and is behaving impeccably. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

You could use #1 SS's method for checking how hot the BBQ was

He was only 6 at the time, and I think he learned an important lesson.

I did that about 10 years ago, with a solid plate hob that had been left on by mistake. I was stood by the hob and noticed the air felt rather warm, so for some reason tested the hob with my palm. Well, I found the one that was on with my first go. Boy, that hurt!

They did shave holes in his fur suit though :(.

I love it when threatening 'inanimate' stuff works. I know it hears me ;)

Fur grows back. It's worth it.

I like to think I have supernatural powers over inanimate objects. I'm sure I e.g. have a knack for getting lights to turn green just as I'm about to cross a road. Well, it entertains me anyway :)

One of the stupidest things I did was a few years ago in an A-level science lesson. I was doing a demo experiment trying to obtain a current-voltage characteristic for a resistor, but the current kept dropping off even when the voltage was increasing. "I don't know why it's doing that" I said to the class. "Perhaps it's getting warm and that's increasing its resistance." And then I reached out with my thumb and forefinger and took hold of it. I spent the next two lessons teaching with a series of lumps of ice to hold in that hand (mercifully my left hand IIRC). I had to do an incident report with recommendations for changes to the risk assessment for the experiment. It now clearly tells the technicians what is the minimum resistance they should provide for it, to make sure the heating effect is minimal.

Yes, it does. I remember not liking the stubble when the fur was growing back on the shaved patches all over LNE's chest that he had for an ECG, though. Ouch.

I loved nights hitting west London when the lights turned green for me all the way through......felt like magic. Crossing London late with the lights turning for you takes mere minutes and you wonder how on earth it can take so long in day time, even by tube its so slow compared to a clear run through.

The patches shaved are minimal. I might even quite like it. :D
