STOP unwanted phone calls
Register FREE with The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to stop unsolicited calls and make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive.
It will also stop those calls where the phone rings and no-one is there.
You can also register to stop unwanted calls and SMS messages to your mobile.
You can register your details by phone as well by calling 08450700707

The Post Office also has contracts to deliver UNADDRESSED junk mail and that's not covered by the Mailing Preference Scheme (because it is unaddressed).
The only way to stop your postman delivering this junk is to write to them and require them to reply acknowledging your instruction to cease and desist.
Their address is:
Royal mail door to door
Room 130
Wheatstone house
Faraday road
Swindon
SN3 5JW
Once they've acknowledged your instruction, the system appears to work - my postlady actually asked me recently if it would be alright if she delivered the government's 'Preparing for emergencies' booklet!
The address is also very useful for sending back (unstamped) any which a temporary postman may deliver!30 years, 217 days!0 -
My experience is that this will stop it MOST of the time.
But if you get a new postie you will need to remind them.
Also you may get it if your regular person if off sick.
Also they might occassionally still deliver things that they deem to be important (like council stuff or the governments emergency booklet).0 -
Have ben registered with TPS for four mnths now but am still getting cold calls.
Anyone know how long it really takes for your TPS registration to filter through?

If you are having a lot of calls which still seem to get through TPS then you can ask BT (if you are still with them) for a service called "choose to refuse"
They will provide it for one month free of charge and during this time you simply enter a pincode immediately after your annoying call. This stops the caller from phoning you again from the number thay are using.
You can also ask BT to block the "silent calls", these aren't usually stoppped by TPS, it's a different service altogether.

This is not as official as the TPS (in fact if you follow the link above you'll learn that it's intended to discourage people from registering for the TPS) but joining it could help.0 -
I have noticed a big difference since I signed up for TPS after reading about it on here some time ago. Since having problems with unwanted texts I also added my mobile phone number and hope this will stop that too. Thanks Glad.
I did have to laugh yesterday though when I got a call at tea-time from the Bank which of course starts off with I hope this isn't an inconvenient time to call? Of course it is, its tea-time! Apparently just a call to see if there is anything regarding my account he could help me with. Just one thing I said, what is my current account overdraft before I pay interest? Oh sorry he says, I don't actually have your account details in front of me!

This is brilliant. Thanks so much. We moved into our new (rented) house a couple of months ago and were getting calls for the previous tenant. Hopefully this will stop/dry up. It's just so annoying. At the last house that we were renting (house sitting for a friend whilst he was travelling round the world), we'd get phone calls asking whether I was Mrs W. Grrrrrrr, no one of that name exists! And Mr W was out of the country!Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0
