They do have these things on pumps.

If your local forcourt does not have them then write to them asking them to fit them.

pumps are regularly maintained and can be repaired\replaced and if they know that the customers want these features then they know to consider them.

It does make me chuckle when you watch people trying so hard to get _right_ on to a round amount of fuel - then go and pay with a card, or buy some sweets or other stuff at the same time.

You're easily entertained! (And a bit weird)

Whilst you're following people around petrol stations and chucking at them, maybe consider the possibility that the person you're freaking out may be self employed and has a tax return to submit and a years worth of 40 quid receipts is easier to add up than a years worth of random numbers.

Anything that makes tax returns a bit less hassle has to be embraced!

I think the logic is that they're saving weight, thereby fuel.

Because, obviously, at about 750g/litre, having a bit less fuel in the tank of your 1.5t car is a HUGE difference...

Problem topping up with small amounts on a diesel with a Diesel Particulate filter and seperate supply of additive is that you pump additive into your fuel tank everytime you open/close the filler cap. Not only do you over inject the additive but you will also need to refill the additive tank way before it should be due, a task usually carried out by your dealer at considerable cost.

I assume the Tesco pumps still require you to dispense the fuel manually using the pump "trigger"?

I have a small metal rod on my key-ring which I use to restore the automatic fill capability on UK petrol pumps. Had it for years, never had a spillage or been challenged for using it.

    Me too.

That's why I round up my fuel to the nearest £10.

Yes they should have £10 and £20 preset buttons. Also If I'm short on fuel and I'm passing an expensive place like Shell, I'll put £10 in then fill up later at Asda where it can be 6p a litre cheaper.

The "saving" is only probably about £3..

Amazes me how many people think like that and then spend 30 minutes driving to find a cheaper filling station.

The method that I find works best:

    Fill tank.
    Pay.
    Drive off.
    Repeat after 500 miles.

Fueling a car is depressing as it is, so the least number of trips I have to sit behind people in the queue who after filling up, insist on changing their seat, faffing with hand bag, adjusting mirrors, applying makeup, messing with something on the back seat, then getting back out to take their coat off, the better.

Ah, the good old days when you could fill up for less than a tenner :) I remember the dismay when petrol went above £1 a gallon for the first time. I can also remember the days of 2*, 3* and 4* petrol ( and paraffin dispensed from garage forecourt pumps ) - showing my age there !!

We always fill up a random amount anyway, it makes it so much easier when checking your bank statement/credit card statement
