We are keeping her indoors at the moment so that we can keep a closer eye on her. I have just checked her and she is acting quite strangely, now lying in a different part of her cage from usual and letting me stroke her (which she hasn't done for a few days) and breathing quite quickly. Beginning to think this is a false alarm
but I will keep an eye on her. Thank you all so much for your support, this is just so stressful

Hi,
Its been many years since I had guinea pigs but when I was about 12, we had about 60, seven different breeds and showed them around the country.
if I remember rightly, just before they give birth the bones near the birth canal start to widen and separate. If you stroke underneath and near their bottom you will be able to feel if they are together or started to widen.
Have just glanced quickly through this post, so perhaps someone has already mentioned it. It used to be a very reliable way to check if near to giving birth.
Hope all goes well with your pig.0 -
Id put the light off,I did this with one of mine and as soon as she was in a quiet room and it was dark and calm she felt so relaxed and happy and most of all ready, she started like a scratching noise then they make a wierd noise as they start to deliver, you will know as its a noise you havnt heard before.I reckon tonight is the night.....Im glad shes indoors.....if you want to keep an eye on her all you need is a torch or a lamp near her and swich the lamp on when you walk in,she will know you and the familiar noises and your smell and will feel safe...if you have a torch point it away from her so as not to blind her just point it away so as to give you just a dim light but enough to see with......:hello:Time2start a new year diet for a new me:j0

Just gone to check her again and I have turned off the light. Not sure where to feel for her pubic bones and I am worried that my inexperienced rummaging might just stress her out. I have turned down the TV in the living room (she is in the hallway) so that she will not be disturbed, apart from my peeking. It is so reassuring to have experienced people on hand. I have looked out the emergency vet number in-case things go awry. Going to be up late to keep an eye on her and I will let you know how things are progressing (or not).Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

that is right oneofseven she will have a bone by her tail end and if you feel it and its fused together then shes not about to go into labour but if its opened and you can only tell this by feeling it but sometimes this can do more harm than good if you dont know what you are doing also the bone will open and close and open and close for days leading up to the birth so not always an indication.....it will take her half an hour or more to give birth and they will come one after the other unless one gets stuck(but lets not go there)im sure all will be fine and you will have baby piggies sqeaking like crazy very soon.:hello:Time2start a new year diet for a new me:j0
