but rspca wont take action as you've removed the evidence by buying the piggy.

seek vet advice but it may be too late for piggy

No it wasn't too late at all. He happily lives indoors in a large cage in my living room, he loves life, he loves my dog- she doesn't care much for him though!

Dora, whereabouts in Cheshire are you? If you're local you could pop round for a cup of tea and to see our piggy palace! :p

That is the cutest thing ever!!!

  • I got two piggies at the weekend (males), i am concerned i am feeding them too much as i have heard "pig by name, pig by nature!". Currently refreshing their hay every morning and dry food then giving a bowl full of mixed fruit/veg every evening. They are loving everything so far but curiously peeling the peel from any banana i put in! They always empty the fresh food bowl after about an hour!
One is six months and a half (Goody) and Henry is a little younger. They both scatter when we go to lift them out but tend to settle on our knees. Just started letting them having a little run around the front room - hoping they will jog off any over feeding :). Not getting any wheeking noises yet - a bit of warbling though which is cute.
    Any advice welcome.

That sounds pretty much the same as the way we feed ours. They are a bit on the chubby side but seem really healthy.

You could start weighing them to check their weight isn't changing too much. We put ours on a plastic tray balanced on some kitchen scales.
  • Thanks for that - picked up some good tips from this thread. Trying to carry on my MSE ways and prove to hubby that keeping them isn't going to be expensive :)

    Hello

I just had to share my excitement as my guinea pig is expecting :D (was pregnant when we bought her)and must be due any day now, I can feel the babies kicking and wiggling! The male that came with her has been removed from the cage and I have added extra bedding, fresh food and made sure she has plenty of fresh clean water is there anything else I should be doing?
We are planning on keeping the babies (and separating the boys and girls so we don't get any more ) and I just wondered where is the most cost effective place to buy bulk good quality dry food for them?? Also is it okay to give them equine quality hay as we figured a bale would be cheaper than the bags from the supermarket/pet shop.
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!

Have you got a jolleys or a Countrywide stores near you: http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/Home.ice they sell food in bulk. Yes you can feed equine hay in bales to guinea pigs, it tends to be fresher than some pet shop bought stuff. I have bought bales for the piggies and rabbits in the past as it works out cheaper and it's good quality hay. What do you feed your piggie on? I feed mine of Wagg normally (although I have just been bought a bag of spillers) as it's around 9.80 or something for a15kg sack but at jolleys you can buy as much or as little as you want. What veg do you feed? I feed mine on a selection bought from lidls or the market.

    Good luck with the birth.

Life has a way to test you, it's how you deal with this that matters
  • You must've been waiting for ages! Guinea pigs' gestation seems to last forever! We fed our guinea pigs rabbit food (we had rabbits too) because it costs less and if you keep them together you can't really tell them which bowl they are each supposed to eat from.

Try out horsey hay, if it's clean, fresh, not moudly etc I can't see there being a problem with it. Rummage in the bins at the greengrocers (maybe ask first, explaining it's for animals), they love the outside cabbage leaves that are always thrown out, and carrot tops etc. They don't mind eating wonkey carrots like humans do either.

Make sure bed stays clean and dry and water is in reach, and hopefully you'll be fine.

    Best wishes!
