BoP now interprets for the hard of reading.
OP's daughter, a designer of fashionable trinkets had a call from a so called celebrity in the Big Apple to use one of her trinkets. Problem was they wanted them as soon as possible, next morning. OP stuck a stamp on a Lacey, got courier round, twice and trinkets never made it to the Big Apple. An opportunity was lost, millionaire, one is afraid, OP's daughter, this day is not. Publicity was not given.
Moral. This is a consumer forum, so business transactions are not covered. Though, one would doubt the business ideals of OP's daughter, as an emergency visa, taxi to the airport and jumping on a plane to guarantee delivery would had cost about £1,500 to £2,000. An missed opportunity.
Rule of BoP lesson number 534. If you're not prepared to expend money in your business, you will not get business.0 -

There are some very, very, stupid people around. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
There are some very, very, stupid people around.
I don't see how you can say that paying for a high level service and relying on a multinational courier is stupid. By that reasoning the UPS service used by the OP should not even exist, as anyone with something sufficiently urgent should be carrying it themselves.
To be honest, this whole 'get on a plane and take it yourself' thing is what is stupid. You can't run a business on the basis that no other business is trustworthy. If she had couriered the item herself and been mugged, would the people who suggested she take it herself castigate her for not hiring bodyguards at either end?
I suppose some form of insurance would have been the best option but it would be expensive, specialised, and quite difficult for someone just starting out to arrange.0 -

I had assumed he was calling BoP stupid not the OP's daughter.0 -

Just sayin'.
You took the words right out of my mouth0 -

But if the opportunity is that life changing would you really want to rely on a 3rd party getting the parcel to NY -especially if the delivery is so time critical?
If the assistant had phoned up and said can you get the items to us by next thursday then yes, using a courier service would be appropriate0 -
OP here.
This was the first, and last, time an event like this will happen. We were indeed stupid enough to think that a company whose sole reason of being is to move goods quickly round the world and deliver to their timescale and prices were trusted to do that.
I have not said it previously, but my daughter has a life threatening illness and could not have just jumped on a plane to New York with a few hours notice as special medical equipment has to be obtained for use outside of the UK.
My son is a contractor who can choose his own hours and thanks to the posts here on USA visa issuing, is on standby for any last minute worldwide deliveries for 'so called' celebrities (actually one of the top five in the world).
This part of the forum is for Praise, Vents and Warnings. My daughter was not selling her items, but gifting them, and I felt it valid to warn other consumers that a large company like UPS was unable to carry out its basic function in this instance.
The bottom line is that UPS has now issued the refund and grasping the spectacular error they made after an internal enquiry, have made a £100 compensation payment.

Then what is the point of UPS offering a guaranteed next day (by midday) to New York from the UK?

If you can get Express Plus for £30 I'd love to know where from. Express plus starts at about £160. Its generally not available via the resellers either.
Actually £112.02 Express Plus via UPS directly on the phone for a shoe box sized, light package UK to New York by midday next day.

Come on OP - don't keep us hanging - who are the top 5 'celebrities' in the world and what does one need to do to get on the list
If you share the 'Top 5' list at least we can all have a guess on the potential wearer of the item0
