And Zen plus a lot of the smaller ISPs

It sounds like a cease was requested which will generate a charge

No, the work was not all done by EE, since they do not have any engineers. If you migrated without using a MAC (you didn't say) then OR will always levy a cease charge, and your ISP will usually pass this on.

No, it's not technically required. But failure to use one will usually result in a £30 cease charge. So maybe ask EE to cover the charge?

  • Thanks
I am going to have to ask EE to cover the cease charge. However, it is time a standard approach was followed. If Offcom says you do not require a MAC then why should one be penalised when you get the new provider to deal with the process.

Changing broadband is supposed to be simple, but it is no wonder people do not bother if the broadband companies set incomprehensible traps for the unknowing.

MSE has a note elsewhere about future campaigns. Simplification of broadband switching should be put on the list.

It's perfectly simple. Obtain a MAC, use it within 30 days (after which it expires) and you will not incur a cease charge.
Blame EE for giving you poor info, not Plusnet or 'the system'.

  • Hi,
I've just cancelled my plusnet broadband, no contract. The call centre worker told me I had to pay £30. Gave em some story about sending an engineer to remove something on the line for new providers or something.

I find this strange. I'm cancelling because I've switched to TalkTalk. In fact, TalkTalk sent an Openreach engineer round this morning and I've been on their internet all day.

So I don't think their engineer really needs to do anything!

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Would it be better to just pay the £30.
  • Just noticed... pluusnet's website has informed me I don't need to pay this if I'm not on a contract. Looks like they were wrong over the phone!

The fee only applies if the connection is being terminated, if you migrate there is no cease of service on the line so no charge.
  • The charge is correct (and many ISPs [Internet Service Provider]will charge you) if you cease to have broadband.

This pays for disconnecting your line from the Broadband equipment at the exchange or cabinet and goes to Openreach (as far as I know).

When you move ISP the new ISP pays for the required changes.
  • That's the thing. I changed to TalkTalk and their service was up and running before I cancelled Plusnet.

This isn't question of the amount, it's more the principle of the thing. Why pay a charge for something to be ceased that hasn't been.

That is on top of not being on a contract.

    Hi Lee,

Unfortunately, what you should have done is request a MAC code from Plusnet and given that to TalkTalk. This would have prevented the £30 charge.

Not sure how to get out of this, maybe post on the official Plusnet forum and see if anything can be done.
