Sorry but just had to say you are talking utter garbage, I have had it happen as well but IT CLEARLY STATES YOU PAY THE PRICE AT THE TIME OF PACKING, so if i ordered on a tuesday xxxx at 99p and new offers were on a wednesday so xxx went back to full price then that is what I pay, so if you were to go in store and expect the price it was yesterday, then thats just unrealistic. jeez how many posts does it take you to get the point.

Is there any need to be so rude? Are people not allowed to have their own view on things?

I actually agree that Rich has a point of some sorts here.

I am absolutely sure the supermarkets could put a system into place that could alter the price of your shopping basket to coincide with any items that will be a higher price on their day of delivery, instead they choose to hide behind their terms and conditions and will probably make extra money from doing this.

It is, in my opinion, misleading.
A smile costs nothing, but gives a lot.
It enriches those who receive it without making poorer those who give it.
A smile takes only a moment, but the memory of it can last forever.

    I agree.

If the retailer knows that the price is going to increase before the date of delivery (which may not be the case, but in many cases I expect is likely - they don't just up the prices on a whim) but doesn't tell the customer, then that is a deliberate misleading omission; an offence under the consumer protection from unfair trading regulations.

I understand why a retailer wouldn't want to give out commercial information like that in advance, but they can't just ignore the law.

Maybe they could get round this by having the delivery driver review each price increase when the items are delivered, giving the customer the chance to accept each one individually; I rarely shop online so I'm not sure whether they do so or not.

Just interested to know if anyone has been overcharged when a product has gone up since ordering more than me from ASDA online.
i ordered m&m's at 98pence each only to be charged £2.09. I ordered 4 of these which was agreed by email at £3.92 and I was actually charged £8.36.

    Hello.

I'd like to ask for advice regarding a similar issue as the people on this thread seem a tad clued up on it (more so than me anyway).

The Tesco site currently advertises Irn-Bru at £1 a bottle (2 litre).

(Apologies for the crude URL formatting. MSE wont allow me to insert screenshots in-line as I'm a "new user".)

Yet, when I visited my local store last week it was priced at £1.70. After chatting with a Tesco rep via their site, she advised the the online price is a "guide price" only and that the in store price may differ from this. I have never found this to be the case previously and decided to enquire further. The person I was passed onto then advised totally different. Claiming that the store price was wrong and that it should be in fact a £1 a bottle, as advertised online. He claimed that he would contact the store and have this rectified. I was in Tesco again today and surprise, surprise, the price was still £1.70...

After speaking with yet another customer service rep, I was given the information provided originally, that the price online is a "guide price" only. At this point I logged into the Tesco site only to see the price automatically shoot up from £1 to £1.70.

My login, which is tied with the postcode of my local store is obviously responsible for this behaviour. However, I was keen to see exactly what Tesco defined as a guide price...

As you can see, their definition of such a term isn't really relevant to my situation in particular. The Irn-Bru isn't on special offer with an expiry date between now and when it is due to be delivered for example...

It's worth noting that this is a generic summary of the term as opposed to a full and concise extract from their T&Cs which may well go on to explain how and why they're allowed to operate in such a way. I'd appreciate if anyone else could chime in here though as I'm pretty annoyed about the whole experience so far. I've contacted them three times and been told two different things entirely. I'm sure their small print will almost certainly cover them legally but the whole thing does seem like a blatant case of mis-selling to me...

I'd be interested to see how it would pan out if officially presented in front of a court to be honest. Tesco may well be operating within the law here, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were obligated to reform their practices in such a way that wasn't so purposefully deceiving to the general public.

    Thoughts?

This happened to me. The online system promotes the irn bru as an offer between certain dates, but it still comes up as £1.70 when added to the basket.
When I received my last delivery, they refunded without question, and advised it was an IT error. Bit of a balls up really.

EDIT: I probably should add that my local store still has the price as £1.70. They can't very well tell you an item is on offer between dates and then decide it isn't once you've ordered, that's why I suspect that they refunded without question.

Yes, you told us that in the original post.
Why have you mentioned it again?

I've just noticed that the price has returned to £1.70 today (whilst logged out of the site that is). There's a possibility this is due to the conversation I had with them yesterday to be honest... The lady I spoke with very foolishly claimed that the prices on their site are constantly looked at/bested in order to remain competitive with their opponents in business. ASDA, Sainsbury's etc. etc.

She didn't quite word it that way of course but my response was along the lines of: "So, in other words, you'll advertise the Irn-Bru for £1 on your site in order not to appear more expensive than ASDA for example (who have it listed at £1), yet anyone who shops in your stores will pay the £1.70 price mark so you still make the profit on it?"

I told her I was a mystery shopper (lies) and that my findings so far were being put forward for investigation (more lies) due to the conflicting pricing/information I had been given from their site and its staff. Now, today the price has returned to £1.70 across the board. Coincidence?

Tesco are a complete joke. This is only one of many pricing issues I've had with them over the past couple of years. I prefer shopping elsewhere, but for simple things like bread/milk etc. it's false economy driving an extra few miles to a different supermarket.

I read yesterday that they've begun closure of 40 odd stores in the North of England. Penny pinching is obviously a priority for them in all walks atm... It's out of order when it's us, the customer, who are bullsh*tted/negatively impacted as result though, in my opinion.

Why did you feel it necessary to lie?
  • Why did you feel it necessary to lie?

Because, sadly, in today's world. It's only really lies such as that which force a company to take your complaint seriously...

Judging by what's been actioned re the price in the past twenty four hours since said correspondence, I would say the above is truer now more than ever.

Let me guess. You think I was morally wrong to lie to the big, considerate, do-gooding entity that is Tesco PLC? It makes me "just as bad as them in this case", right? :D

Tesco have a system in place, if you order an item that is on offer but the offer will expire by your delivery date, they tell you when you add it to your basket, if you don't want to pay the full price then the onus is on the customer to take it out, it cannot be clearer I am afraid.
