I bought some plates off ebay a while ago, as has been said they are bending the law somewhat, they were sold as road legal show plates.
Ordered around lunchtime, and delivered the next day, a pair of plates cheaper than one at Halfords!!0 -

Show plates are legal aren't they?0 -
They advertise them as show plates to get around the fact they have not seen the V5C and proof of ID.
But in every other way the plates are identical to one you buy from a local shop and shows your ID.
Same plate material, Same fonts, legal BS and postcode markings.
They are breaking the law by selling them without ID. Once you get them your legal.

I'm pretty sure you can get show plates (ie ones not to be used on the road) made saying whatever you want, with no V5. The fact they are road legal (correct spacing, manufacturers name/postcode, bs number), and I used them on the road and had the car mot'ed with them fitted is irrelevant i'd have thought as they are not being sold as road plates.
I'd agree DEFINITELY not in the spirit of the law, but are any laws actually being broken?, i'm no solicitor so I've no idea, but I'll bet there isn't as so many companies are running on ebay et al selling them, and as far as a 'user' goes, the plates are road legal so who would ever know/check?0 -
The only 'law-breaker' can be the seller.
The buyer who screws or sticks the plates on his/her car hasn't broken any laws as far as I can see.0 -
This eBay seller sells "legal to the eye" plates with just his 5 letter company name initials and post code in small discreet letters.
Also Halfords logo and postcode are unnoticeable on their plates as they are blended to the same colour as the plate. Least there were 5 years ago when I had some.0 -

I bought some 'show plates' off eBay - correct colour, reflectivity, font and spacing, but no postcode or BS number. Half the price of Halfords and no hassle with documents. My view is they are within the spirit of the law if not the letter, and the car has passed 6 or 7 MoTs with them on with no comment from the tester. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
