Number plates - dealer addresses

Hi guys,
Just bought a new car which is going through the Reg plate transfer process to go from a private plate back to the original plate.. and wondered if what the dealer is telling me is true...
I phoned and asked specifically to have blank plates (without dealer address etc). He said it's now a legal requirement to show this on plates and it's highly unlikely they'd be able to honour my request to have blank plates.
Is this true?
Can't I get the plates elsewhere then?
Thanks,
P

Yes, that's true.
Yes, you can get 'show plates' made up without dealer markings. They will fail an MOT (unless sympathetically tested) and contravene the "Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001".
Show plates are made by the same places those morons who want to make AB12 CDE look like 'BIG DAVE' go to get the lettering played with (obviously they then also use 15 fixings and coloured caps to finish the overall 'look at me, I'm a massive be11-end' effect).0 -
They'll need the BS mark and at least the postcode of the person who made them.
Nothing to stop you buying them elsewhere but they won't be legal.0 -
Spicy McH is right - all they need to have is the BS au45d marking and the postcode of the maker.
It can be in a very small font in the bottom corner and need not be noticeable unless you are really up close.
But most dealers want to make it into a free advert for themselves.
Have a look around and I'm sure you will find some discreet ones.0 -
Any ideas where?0

What are those marks in the bottom right?
So it'll still need to have my dealers address etc?0 -
As said previously, if you get the plates from the dealer they don't HAVE to have the dealer name and address on. But unless you'd agreed pre-contract that the plates must be devoid of any advertising (bar the legal minimum) then you're on shaky ground to insist on this now.
Tip for the future ... negotiate advertising rights before signing for a vehicle.0 -
From a seller who isn't complying with the law.0 -

I did think that as well. Don't they documentary evidence to make them up?0 -
Here's another source - over 6300 sold and 100% feedback.

Most folks don't care that the seller is likely breaking/bending the rules - the plates are perfect.0
