John Lewis price match a con?

Was in Selfridges Food Halls this afternoon so decided to check out a few items that I've been looking at for the house as there's a sale on.
To be honest I'd prefer to get everything from john lewis for the convenience of it.
Was fully expecting JL to be matching the advertised sale prices as they claim to do as Selfridges must be JL's biggest competitor on Oxford Street but NOPE!
28cm Classic round casserole dish Selfridges = £168 JL = £210
Dualit Architect kettle Selfridges = £63.20 JL =£79
LG 55" OLED TV Selfridges = £1999 JL = £2300
What a con!

They will match it at point of sale if you show them a competitors advertised price. Simples.
It's hardly a con, you are free to shop where you like so there is no need to get your knickers in a twist.0 -

Here is a quote from the price promise....
"We set highly competitive prices for all our products, WITH A DEDICATED TEAM REGULARLY CHECKING THEM AGAINST OTHER HIGH STREET COMPETITORS......"
I don't think I'm getting my "knickers in a twist" when a major retailer and competitor 5 minutes up the road is having a well advertised sale on major brands. Are we honestly to believe that John Lewis's team of "dedicated" price checkers missed it..... or was it conveniently overlooked?
How many people would take JL'd price promise at face value and not check?0 -
Price match guarantees are a wheeze which is designed to take advantage of the fact that most people don't bother checking.
If JL reduce the casserole from £210 to £168 then they lose £42 on every one that they sell, but if they leave it at £210 then they only lose £42 to the minority of customers who can be bothered checking.
Most people will jump to the conclusion that it must be cheapest just because they see the guarantee, which is exactly what they want you to do.0 -

If you go into JL with the 3 prices from Selfridges then they will price match them.

I usually am a big JL fan but I asked them to price match something for me and the girl on the till made such a song and dance about it. She was quite rude, sighing really obviously as she was doing it.
I actually told her not to bother in the end and went and bought it from their competitor. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

The tag line "Never knowingly undersold." surely means that they should then sell at that proven lower price to every subsequent customer.0 -
But...

"Oh, sorry about that price difference, we didn't know." Covered. Like another poster has already said, it's just part of the advertising (which works very well for JL).0 -
What strikes me as conspicuous about JL prices is that they often include an extended warranty. I rather think that if you go and complain that your laptop would have been cheaper elsewhere, they will just point out that the competitor isn't providing the 2 year guarantee.0

Therefore, one person requesting the price match means that the company knows.0 -
I like PC worlds price match thing , very very few of the computer related items are available from the other suppliers on the list0
