Extra selling at the till

I hate it too. I've never said yes to their till offers, so it obviously doesn't work that well. It's the same when you enter a clothes store & you're immediately asked if you need any help. That puts me off so much!!!
I agree with the savers comment. Their tills are incredibly cluttered. It would drive me crazy to work there!0 -
I must say that whilst I find the fact that shop management forces this on till staff and customers is annoying, it doesn't actually bother me in practice.
I cheery: "Would you like <x>, it's on offer", and a polite "No, thanks", takes no more than 3 seconds and is usually actioned in tandem with some other necessary action.
If the till staff were required to do a long spiel, it would be a different matter, of course. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
If the parking meter getting more money an hour than the failed university graduate at the till did this to me, the answer would be no, an while you're at it, put the lot you have just passed through the till back on the shelf as well0

You really should attempt constructing a proper sentence before trying to belittle others.0 -
I used to work under the golden arches when I was in 6th form. We would be told to suggest a large meal rather than a medium meal every time. When the supersize option came in we were then told to upsell to that. I am not a natural salesperson so it was quite uncomfortable. I don't remember the typical weight of the fries but the drink 'buckets' were 0.8 litres  Even with ice the quantity was frightening.
We were told by one ambitious manager that if a size wasn't requested we should automatically sell the supersize meal. I found this really hard to deal with. I used to get told off for offering 'medium, large or supersize', it was recommended to offer large or supersize only and a medium should only be sold if specifically requested.
Having been at the sharp end of it I find a polite 'no thank you' deals with the offer - I know that the upsale isn't instigated by the member of staff on the till, it'll be an ambitious manager, or a head office in its ivory tower."Does it spark joy?" - Marie Kondo

The vast majority of shop assistants, their full job title is customer SERVICE assistant, not SALES.
They should be employed to serve customers with good customer service. Not to sell silly things. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I agree completely about this upwelling trick. I used to work for Hmv and every time someone bought a game we had to offer a care plan, every piece of tech had to have a care plan sold with it, every ipad had to be sold with a case (apparently this doubled the profit), we also had to offer £3 dvds and cos at Xmas and other peak trading times. I've seen the figures and they did pull in a lot of profit, but look what happened to Hmv......thing is those higher up just see the bottom line rather than the long term impact on reputation. I think most people would rather have a sales assistant who honestly told them what they needed for a product and offered them appropriate optons.0

I remember when HMV started that, I was getting chewed out right left & centre by the manager yet the area manager was loving the fact I was making them money hand over fist. Target was officially something like 20% with a minimum of 10% console guarantees as well - that was ofcourse back in the day when HMV was still relevant in games retail.
Don't even get me started on that pure card nonsense!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Please do not blame the staff - I work for one of these stores on a Saturday and I hate to have to ask customers 'would you like any of our special offers, the chocolate is only a £1 ' If I am heard not to ask or am reported by a secret shopper for not asking I am considered to be doing less than my job and would reprimanded!!0
