However, they'll never know. If you say something, or even write a letter or post on their Facebook or whatever, they're getting feedback that their policies are turning people away.
If you just never shop there again, they won't know that they've lost a sale.

Ok, do that on Facebook then. But I bet with WH Smiths it doesn't change. In fact, I can guarantee it!

Why are we all writing letters all of a sudden?

This is exactly the sort of thing that a Facebook/twitter campaign would be great for.

Because some people hold Facebook & Twitter (and all the other social media websites) in total contempt.

I meant that you don't have to worry about something being foisted on you and the member of staff doesn't have to worry about their percentages for till sales dropping

I find it annoying and that it cheapens the brand for me. I was in WHSmith in Norwich last week and the whole look and feel of the shop by the till and outside just reminded me of a corner shop. I know they are fighting to survive in todays online world, but just strikes as desperation.

Pouldland do this all the time now, usually on items priced, erm, above a £1!

Like a desk fan for £8.99.

Are they going to change from what they are, a cheapo shop, to mainstream, like Wilko has become?

My Poundland has what you could say is an offer of the week at the tills.

Could be chocolate bar packs or bags of sweets.

I have got to the point of saving ' so that's the offer of the week this time' with a smile and then politely decline.

Checkout operators trying to sell you products you don't want at the tills is very annoying for both customers and staff. Please remember it's not the fault of the staff on the tills. They're told by managers they have to ask everyone, and if they're spotted not asking all customers (or even not being enthusiastic enough when they're asking customers which item of irrelevant tat they want to buy on that particular day) they will get in trouble. The best option is probably that already suggested - vote with your feet and shop elsewhere. Another good idea is to complete the survey on the till receipt, a lot of stores now give a link to a customer satisfaction survey on receipts where you can give feedback on your shopping experience and also enter a prize draw. If enough people say they were irritated by pressurised sales techniques when paying then shops might think twice about forcing staff to ask and forcing customers to endure it.

If they are polite and at least a bit friendly, I say "Oh the joy of being in retail and being forced to say this to every customer".
    This usually gets a smile.

But if they are a bit grumpy (or worse) then I say "No thanks I don't smoke". Sometimes it makes them smile (but not very often).

And I always use "No thanks I don't smoke" to any street canvassers. They usually have an answer to every response, but my comments always confuse them. And that makes me chuckle.
  • WH Smith are the worst, and I avoid it like the plague.

What annoys me is that I am a curvy lady and trying to lose weight. They then offer me a 'bargain' bar of chocolate at a knock down price!

I phoned their head office and complained (this was at least 3 years ago) and they really didn't give a damn. The reply was 'we are merely try to point out special offers to our customers' - fair enough, but how about they point out the cheap paper-clips or post it notes!

Clearly they don't listen to their customers and I for one won't be sorry to see that particular High Street shop go down the pan.

If I'm offered chocolate at the counter I say
"Do I look as if I need to eat more chocolate?"
As I'm at least a stone overweight there's no polite answer to this.
If I'm feeling less confrontational I say,
"Unfortunately I don't need to eat more chocolate!"
