Can we add Matalan to the list-drives me bonkers!
Usually along the lines of
Do you have a Matalan card?
No
Just give me your name and postcode please
I don't want one thank you
Oh its not a credit card (usually with a smug, condescending attitude-I know it’s not-I also know you only want my details to send me tons of marketing rubbish and for your own data capture)
No thank you (I always say this nicely and smile at this point)
It won't take a minute
No thank you
But you cannot buy your items without one
Ok I'll leave it thank you-starts to walk away from till
Well I can do it this one time grrrrrrrrrrrr
Yes I know the sales team have to ask, but my always polite refusal should be enough-went to collect some tops I had ordered yesterday & paid for on line without a card-but sales assistant said I could not have my paid for order until I signed up for a card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(To the "why shop there then?"-I'm short and like their trousers for work and several times after ordering on-line the leg length is incorrect/different even when buying more than one pair of the same trousers, so like to check them in store to save the hassle of returning them)I have always relied on the kindness of strangers0 -
I actually feel sorry for the SA who have to do this as part of their job.
I'm sure they'd much rather just take people's money and get on with serving the next customer.
That's why I try to be pleasant when I'm saying 'no'.
They're probably doing a job that they don't get much satisfaction out of and which pays minimum wage.
If I found it really annoying, I would write to the retailer and make my point, not take it out on the SA.0 -

We have to offer products and not only are managers observing us but we have regular mystery shoppers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Sometimes I wonder if Matalan want the sale or whether your personal details for marketing is king? The man without a signature.0 -
We have to offer products and not only are managers observing us but we have regular mystery shoppers.
And those mystery shoppers are given the list of questions that are supposed to be asked, along with other things that they have to observe, so there is no getting away from it, unless you want your area manager kicking !!! about a bad result because one question didn't get asked.0 -

I agree with the employee though, it is a bit silly.
Except that the card gives Tesco more information about your shopping habits: there is nothing silly at all about not wishing to give this information away, and so renouncing the small reward that they give in return. That is simply a personal choice.0 -

The problem is their core business (reading material) no longer makes money, that stopped when the Internet was invented because people can read loads online for free (or extremely cheap) as and when they want. The only reason they stay in business is because of the Airport stores that still make money and the profit from add on selling at the till.
When you look at it that way it makes sense, they do that or close. Trust me I know that stats, I worked for them for a few years a while ago.0 -

However, the word, "just", preceding my purchase moves the responsibilty for trying to upsell the new fragrance to the deaf or stupid (IMHO) cashier.
Yes, but in order to NOT try and upsell you have to show initiative as an employee. You don't get paid to think, you get paid to do what the boss tells you to do.
I can assure you, their job is more important than your misguided opinion of them. The sad thing is that you tend to get marked on a scale, and this measures how competent you are in your role. "Didn't try and upsell? Sorry daytona0 but that's an autofail. 2 more of those and I'll have to give you a written warning. We will monitor you again sometime this week to make sure you are on track". It is easier to just do what the bosses say, instead of trying to explain how a customer uttered the word "just" before his sentence and as such you made an executive decision not to upsell. I can guarantee that you'll either get a blank stare from the manager or they will tell you not to do it again.0 -

Aye that is a really good point. I've just checked and it looks like you need to fill in a form, so they'll end up with your personal information. I don't see too much harm in providing this in order to get some discounts though. Certainly a personal choice. I wouldn't modify my initial post though because it does highlight one viewpoint, and the person quoted was a bit extreme in refusing to shop there ever again!0 -

I quite like that. I get vouchers for things I buy rather than things I don't.
But it is personal choice, and if you don't want one, that's fine.0
