Extra selling at the till
Comments

Just put your items on the counter and say "Just those thanks"
Then, if they start asking about other items you are quite justified in blanking them.0 -
Savers are the worst for it around here. There's that much stuff near the till, there is barely enough run for your baskets. And they don't seem to give up either, it goes like this -
'interested in any fragrance today?'
'No thank you'
'It's reduced from £19.99 to £5.99'
'No thank you'
'We also have a special on eye shadow......'
The thing is, is that that Savers is terrible for queuing anyway, by the time they have run through the list, they could have served about 4 people. It's annoying.
Funnily enough, the staff at Superdrug don't seem to bother with the offers, they just serve you and that's it. We just want to get our items and go. Shopping is stressful enough as it is sometimes without having someone trying to flog you tat.BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.
comping = nowt more thrillin' than winnin':T :j0 -
The thing that really annoys me at WH Smith is all the extra scraps of paper they give you with your receipt: "money off everything in store!" but only on a certain date... and a very long list of exclusions in tiny print!0

Every time you buy something price marked at WHSmith, I'm sure you can almost hear one of their directors sobbing uncontrollably.0

I no longer go to wh Smith, as I'm fed up of reaching past the people reading the magazines, to get the I need I want to buy. I now subscribe to a couple of magazines and give the store a miss.0

HMV have lots of stuff on till desk..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Pardon , I,m stone deaf ! and give them a blank look , had a sales woman in wilkinsons (trying to add a phone top-up) screaming the other day0

No thanks, and no I don't have a loyalty card, I don't want a loyalty card, I just want to buy my shampoo and get out of the shop at a much faster pace than this is taking!
I hate being constantly asked if I have a loyalty card. I don't go to Tesco these days, but when I did, I got constantly asked if I had a card, and I kept saying no. I actually stopped going to the local Tesco (3 miles from where I live,) when a rude woman serving me said I was 'a bit stupid' for not having their loyalty card. That was the last time I ever went (2 years ago,) and I have no intention of ever going again. I have been to the one 9-10 miles away several times, but it is rare, and I have probably not spent more than £35 in Tescos in 2 years.
Iceland always ask too, and Morrisons always ask 'do you have our match and more card?' The only one I have is the Nectar card, and I have had that about 5 years. That covers a few places and I do get benefits from it.But if you buy online you will often be cajoled into considering extra products. Not a lot of difference
There is a lot of difference, because you aren't facing a real person online!Yes absolutely! I stopped using WH Smith's because of it. I always have an urge to say "If i wanted it, I'd ask for it so shut up" but I haven't done so because i know it is probably forced on them by their managers.
Phew, a lot of people not got a lot of love for WHSmith: I thought it was just me. I can't stand them. I used to love the shop, as it sold records/CDs, DVDs, video games (I think) books, newspapers, magazines, stationary, board games, toys, all sorts... but now it's an overpriced hovel with worn carpets, listless staff, products that look like they have been there since the 1990s, and too-high shelves; oh and it always stinks too.
And yes they do always try and flog something at the till. Always.
How the heck are WHSmith's still going?!cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0 -
Just wanted to rant really. I hate it when you go into a shop, queue to buy your things and then at the till you get asked if you're interested in buying an array of items they have on the counter. I feel for the staff who are forced to do this by higher-ups, but it really puts me off going into places. How to people not realise this is why a lot of people shop online?
Particularly bad offenders are WH Smiths, Savers, Superdrug and Claire's Accessories - oh, and anywhere that tries to get you to sign up to a store card.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -

Wait, I'm just curious but are you refusing to go to Tesco because of what one employee said to you? Or is it just not your preferred choice? One of those scenarios is extremely silly, especially when you consider employee personalities and staff turnover in large supermarket chains (it could have been said in ANY store by ANYONE).
I agree with the employee though, it is a bit silly. By virtue of you being on this forum I do not understand why you wouldn't show more consideration for loyalty cards; after all, they simply give you cash back for doing activities you would do anyway. The whole principle behind them is to make you go to their supermarket more than others, but even if you don't change your shopping habits then you are going to end up with some money back eventually...
I certainly wouldn't call the employee rude, unless it was in the intonation/tone, but it was a bit plain-speaking. That is a good thing really, I only wish more people were like that!0
