I haven't had a hot drink in McDs for ages, so it's not that.

The dialog usually goes like this:-

Me: BigMac meal, please
McDs: What drink?
Me: Orange Juice
McDs: Is that a large meal?
Me: No.
McDs: >funny look<

Perhaps everyone round here always has a large meal?

I don't think sales assistants are mindless drones, but I do think many of them disable large parts of their mind whilst working - probably in a heroic attempt to maintain their sanity.

Too right, and the pure monotony of the job. I became so used to asking, "Would you like a carrier bag?" That even if someone came and said pre-emptively, "I don't want a bag", I would still ask as if they hadn't said anything, or if someone declined a bag I was so used to going through the motions of putting things in a bag that I'd still put the stuff in one. Part of your brain shuts off and you become a robot.

Not a good day for me today !

1) Asked in Greggs if I would "like to add a drink" to my lunchtime Cheese & Bacon wrap !

2) Filled up at a brand new Shell fuel station and old fashioned digital LCD displays on pumps replaced by colour video screens beaming out adverts with fuel display relegated to just a corner of screen !

Arghhh ! It's called 'Shell FuelCast' - Google it !

They say:

“We know our customers, on average, are only with us for less than five minutes, but it is important to Shell that its customers get the most from their money and their time,” said Suess. “Features such as Fuel Cast, or REEP, make the experience more enjoyable and memorable.”

I say:

Mercy, Mercy ! It's a truly awful experience. You HAVE to watch the screen so that you can see how much fuel has been pumped !!

My reference to the golden arches several pages back was McD's
Granted it was about 12 years ago now that I worked there, but we were definitely strongly encouraged to upsell.

The store was at a large theme park and we had no restaurant, just an open counter. If I remember rightly, at that time our store was one of the highest ranking stores in the country in terms of sales- no doubt helped by the slightly reduced menu and no seating.
At peak times (summer hols) there would be a sea of people in front of you waiting to be served, 12 tills going, kitchen in a non-stop frenzy and still the managers would expect to hear "would you like that supersized?" on every order.

McDonalds get me with this, can't even get two words out and....is that as a meal?

Sometimes I say "did I stutter", or "I hate being interrupted" or "are you hard of hearing"? I'd like just X and X.

McD's still try to convince you that as a meal it is cheaper - as well as may be, but sometimes you want exactly what you want, not what they want you to have. I do feel for counter staff that are forced to up sell.
