Extra selling at the till

Nobody has mentioned McDonalds!! Is that a meal sir? AAAAAArg!!!
That's because the till uses a different menu for a meal rather than putting them in separately.
If a customer asks for all three things separately it's a pain having to get the manager to cancel the order so you can put it in as a meal because they don't want to pay the price for each item separately.
I've worked there, you'd be surprised how many people ask for a big mac when actually they do want a meal, not just the burger.
It only takes seconds to ask if it's a meal, and it's not for upselling, although it probably works that way for a few customers. I was never asked to upsell. They were busy enough already, they wanted to get customers through as quickly as possible.0 -

If I don't want a storecard, then I don't want one, and I don't appreciate being called stupid by some mindless drone on a checkout, because I choose to not comply with Tesco's wishes, and buy into the store's storecard system, so that they can give me 1p off a tin of something I never buy, along with pointless vouchers for other stuff I never buy! I much prefer Lidl and Asda; no silly pointless vouchers; just MUCH cheaper prices.
Whatever my reasons for not having storecards, that is my business, and I don't appreciate some silly bint at a checkout calling me stupid for not having one. There is always some annoying individual, who thinks they have a right to tell you what is best!' You know what is best? People staying out of my face and minding their own business! If I don't want a storecard, what has it got to do with the checkout operator? Or YOU, or anyone else, for that matter,?
And yes I did stop going to the store for this reason, but that wasn't my main store for shopping, so it was no loss. I did write a letter to the manager about the rudeness of his staff though, and did name the staff member concerned. I suggested he retrained her in customer care, as hard-working people who come to their store do not appreciate being called 'stupid' because they don't sing to Tesco's tune!
I do think that calling you stupid was incredibly rude, and the checkout assistant should be re-trained - but why call her a mindless drone? Sales assistants are just ordinary people doing a job to pay the rent. Perhaps you didn't mean to, but you made it sound as if you look down on people who work in retail.0 -

I do actually also get annoyed though, by being asked for my postcode. I just give them the postcode of the one I used to have many moons ago. :rotfl:
Why DO they ask for your postcode by the way?
Screwfix can have the gold star for asking for your entire life story - they insist they register your details in order to purchase something and give the usual spiel about how they won't use them to send marketing material. Guess what turns up at my door a week later?! A poxy Screwfix flyer. :mad:0 -

To add to username's point above, it also helps identify any possible refund fraud.
At least it did for the retailer my friend used to work for as I asked him this very question. They had an issue with someone returning a high amount of mobile phones that hadn't been purchased through them. It obviously caught someone's attention (or more likely some computer) when lots of the same type of phone were being refunded using the same post code across numerous stores.0 -

Lots of shops ask for your name and postcode when you are getting a refund. The information is checked by auditors when the accounts are done to check for fraudulent transactions. Sometimes being asked for your postcode when you are buying things is the retailer checking the distance people travel to visit their store, I've been asked in Asda before but that was a few years ago but it's a bit weird they wouldn't sell an item to you without a postcode if it was an 'off the shelf' item. The only thing I can think of that you be obliged to give would be a tv as they have to pass on your name and address onto the tv licensing.0 -

They don't have to do that any more. (Not for a couple of years).0 -

So they never ask if you want a "Large Meal", then?0 -

Maybe it depends on the manager? Some might ask if you want a large meal in the hopes that it encourages more people to say yes, but in the one where I worked for 18 months we didn't try to upsell at all.
It was always jam packed, and too much talking would have meant fewer customers served.0 -
Okay.
Some of the staff do look at me strangely when I decline a large meal, having not realised that (a) I don't need any more fries in my life, and (b) I am drinking orange juice, which only comes in one size.0 -

I can't remember the rules about extra charges, but iirc they add extra if you have a hot drink with a medium meal, so it's the same price as buying a large anyway. But I couldn't eat a large fries on my own anyhow!0
