about £40 today on solo compared to £140 on normal tariff in 3 years time (at todays prices)

That's exactly what I pay now, £10 per quarter. So it will be a 250% rise for me too.

How can you possibly only use 4 gallons of water a day?
As I said, that's barely enough to flush the bog twice a day let alone any other usage.

All my water is recycled in one way or another. And I don't use much to start with. Instead of being amazed at how low that use is you should consider how it is that you use so much, irrespective of whether you can afford it or not.

I'm not amazed. I just don't believe you.

    Try explaining...

Even if you are using recycled water, you'll still be using 4 gallons a day just by flushing the loo twice (and most people need to use the loo more than that is a day) ... unless you have an on site sewerage farm and recycle your bog water too.

Well, I've had a good run - been on SoLo for about 16 years.
As I use about 300 - 350 litres/week it's not a lot of money but, if I've calculated correctly, increase by about 90% to the full (current) Standard rate.
I realised in the late '90s that if everybody went on to meters the party would end. AW does have to fund a supply that will handle potential maximum demand, so if we all were on meters and frugal the charges on SoLo/metered wouldn't cover the cost.
Having said this, I feel that there is a case for having tiered charges: SoLo rate for <1cu.m/week/person, then double that up to 1.5cu.m onthe whole amount, then double again etc. This might have an effect on the wealthy wastrels and cover the costs of filling swimming pools in the Summer.
  • I emailed them to ask if their bog-standard reply was their full and final response, they replied today yes it is and gave me the CCW contact details so I've fired off a complaint straight to them.

In my letter to CCW I have indicated I believe AW are acting unfairly due to price increases compared to RPI, and also Ofwat set a 'tariff basket' and I have argued this basket allows differences within their overall provision but the formula does not necessarily allow for such a weighted difference in this instance (but I'll readily admit the formula calculation is pretty complex so I wouldn't stake my life savings on it).

I'd suggest others consider asking AW if their response is full and final so they can escalate to CCW if they want.
