breakdown cover

Sorry if this is an inappropriate post here. I am feeling completely sick; I bought my 21 year old son breakdown cover through what I assumed was Greenflag as he left home to work away last august. His battery was flat on mother's day when he was coming home so he rang Greenflag. They couldn't find him registered but I asked them to call out anyway thinking there was some mistake. It now transpires that his Breakdown Insurance was with Green Insurance not Greenflag so the call out will be £108.Any advice please?
I'm not sure what advice you're looking for. Your son called out Green Flag, who he does not have breakdown cover with, so they charged him (as you would expect). There seem to be no grounds for complaint. There's also no complaint against Green Insurance as they presumably could have fulfilled the breakdown contract had your son contacted them.
You can try sending the bill off to Green Insurance explaining your mistake and asking for some sort of goodwill payment, but I wouldn't hold your breath on it.0 -
YES I get that this is my fault entirely, was looking for some friendly support but to no avail. If you think I am that stupid why bother commenting ?
Greenflag charged you for a callout because you called them out instead of Green Insurance?
What "friendly support" were you looking for?0 -
Oh dear, I seem to have ruffled a few feathers ! Thank you for the lovely comments, I have taken them on board and if anyone ever rings me to ask me a question that I should know the answer to I shall say "What are you phoning me for, you may be stuck in the middle of nowhere but I will not give you any advice as to who to ring as you should know even though I haven't already told you"
You bought your son breakdown cover for his 21st birthday present, but you didn't actually tell him about it or give him the details, so he could use it if ever he needed to?0 -
thats just geat, I posted a thread asking a specific question or 2, one has been answered the rest of the thread is discussing the 2nd post which has nothing to do with my original question.
I assume no one has heard of/used breakdown assist?
nothing like hijacking a thread0 -

I agree the hijacking was out of order but post 4 answered your first question. For the reviews, you might have better luck on Google? Simply because you can cast your net wider than a single forum board.0 -

I have AA.
I know some will whine about that but my motorbike conked out 30 miles from home in the middle of nowhere at night and the guy got to me in 20 minutes, bodged a fix in 5 mins then followed me the 30 miles home. Couldn't fault them at all, really happy.0 -
Not heard of them, you should definitely read through their full policy wording.
I took out a policy with IC Breakdown but reading their policy booklet the cover isn't as great as AA/RAC, but it is lots cheaper. eg their national recovery lets them take your car to a local garage if they can fix it within 24 hrs instead of taking you straight home, which might not be convenient for you if you have to get home straight away regardless.
Also check that it really is a breakdown service and not just insurance. If you breakdown will they send someone, or do you have to pay for it and claim back off the insurance?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Can't help the original poster aside from that there are a lot of these breakdown insurers who use a network of third party people. I doubt that there is much difference between them, and it will depend on the individual who turns up as to what the experience will be. I was happy enough with Green Flag who (used to) work like that.
My not very helpful advice to trying to manage a 21 year old is stop helping them, and give them the bits of paper so that they can sort themselves out. I'm happy enough to offer explanations(lots of this stuff is complicated if you've never had to deal with it yourself), but leave them to make their own arrangements.
My advice would be - you stuffed up, you pay the call out for him - it'll encourage you to be less helpful!0 -
thanks to those that replied, I am going to go with startrescue, they have many good reviews and I only need cover for one car dont need the cover to be for the driver plus spouse etc so startrescue looks like it suits0
