To be fair on the mutts, if they're both shut in the house all day and not getting exercise and fresh air they may have become neurotic, hence they are barking at anything that goes past.

But attempting to reason with the owners has so far not amounted to much.. so what does the OP do? This must be a problem up and down the land for night-workers. They need to sleep during the day, but obviously during the day there are going to be noises (phones ringing, people yelling, dogs barking, etc). They need to find some way of soundproofing the room or sleeping somewhere quieter, imo

It might be worth speaking to the RSPCA - if the dogs are barking that much they may be bored and understimulated.

Other than that - document the problem and speak to environmental health about noise nuisance.

Some dogs just bark at anything. Mine does, and there is little I can do to stop him. He barks at the vacuum cleaner. He barks when the washing machine spins. He barks when the phone rings. He just barks at any noise really. We've tried distracting him, telling him off, various anti bark collars, etc. all to no avail.

He has loads of toys to play with, and gets taken for regular walks. He is not a nervous dog.

The only thing left is to remove his voice box, which I refuse to do.

    Oh go on...
  • I haven't got a sense of humour. I have only laughed a couple of times in recent years. The first time was when Tony Blair said he was telling the truth and the second time was when Gordon Brown told us he could save the world.

So I've reported everyone on this thread.

OP: RSPCA is the best answer.

I had one of those 'will report you to the RSPCA' letters through the door. I HAD left the dogs outside and forgotten I'd done so the previous day. And I'd gone out that week to see my father (who was quite ill) for the afternoon - a rare occurrence - and the dogs had managed to open the back door in spite of the key being in the lock. They almost certainly went out and barked. Hadn't happened before or since. My neighbours have dogs, go out to work, and they DO bark all day (fortunately we have thick walls, but it does concern me sometimes). They also walk them twice a day. Just like I do mine.

I did feel that I was being blamed for the fact that there are quite a few dogs barking in the back yards at times. Even late at night. What happened that week was exceptional.

I also knew that no way would any action be taken over my dogs by the RSPCA.., they are incredibly healthy and fit with frequent walks and I play with them. I don't work so I don't normally leave them alone for long.

But I did make absolutely sure the dogs were let in if they even squeaked from then on, because someone was obviously upset by dog noise. I literally wait by the back door so they have time to do whatever and then I let them in again. I didn't want mine adding to the dog noise problem. It wasn't out of fear of being reported, it was consideration. Even though I'd much prefer the person concerned spoke to me personally rather than posted an anonymous, threatening letter through the door. I'd have apologised to her and tried to find out exactly what the problem was. In case it was worse than I thought, and there was something else I could do.
  • OP get your bedroom soundproofed, you can get the boards yourself off the internet. Yes its bad that the dogs bark, but instead of arguing with the neighbours for months until the matter gets sorted just do this.

Unfortunately,as another poster pointed out, some dogs will just bark at anything.

If I read the OP correctly though, he/she isn't actually saying that the dogs bark constantly but that they bark at things they see outside the house. I'm sure this doesn't really make a difference to the annoyance level of somebody trying to sleep but there is a clear difference between an unhappy/bored dog barking constantly and a dog barking to alert of possible intruders (which is what this sounds like).

That said, if anybody has any solutions (which are serious and don't involve dog murder!) I'd be interested because mine and my mum's dogs do this and it drives me mental! They don't even have to see the person, hearing them is enough although they also do it when people are at home, which doesn't seem to be the case with the OP.

It sounds as though you've found out why the previous people who lived in that house wanted to move......

I have great sympathy for you OP.
