We've got a terrier, any ball that came into our property would get one bounce and then be swiftly deflated, surely the police can't arrest a dog for bursting a ball in its own garden?

Yep I like the freak them out idea. Appearing at the door shirtless ect would be a good start. Scale it up and answer the door with the largest kitchen knife that you own while making huge moaning noises....have a vegetable in your other hand......as you were just chopping the veg up when the door went. Finally appear with an axe covered with tomato sauce......lol. Sorry just trying to cheer you up a bit op.....don't take any of my post/advice to literally hehe.
BTW I have a German Shepherd and as above the ball would possibly get to bounce once and it would be gone..... my boy loves bursting balls though and if he is roaming the garden he usually does not allow even a mild bounce before it is tucked safely in his mouth.....

Lol David, ours peels tennis balls. She takes great delight in getting the ball, tearing a tiny hole in the felt then tugging the felt away from the interior. Anything that bounces or squeaks gets "killed" in an instant. We have a video where she completely destroys a cheapie pets at home squeaker in 24 seconds.
