Sorry Cherryscone, I accidentally quoted you!
  • Does anyone know how the marking system works with the AQE - is there a formula applied ? Just curious if there are 62 questions on a paper how many would my child need to get right. I know its the best out of the 3 papers but just wondering. I suppose its still a grey area really. Any thoughts / advice would be appreciated :-)

Yes there is a formula applied and no they don't tell you how it works. The marks appear to be setup up so most kids will fall in the 95/105 range. You can't easily translate from the scores on the papers to the final AQE result. The mark/score relationship changes from year to year.
Scores are age standardised in some fashion to try and compare kids of similar ages.
  • thank you for the quick reply. I was just curious. I will be so glad when its all over ! Thank you :-)
  • And neither has my sons school

Thank you very much indeed for reassuring me that my situation is not exceptional.
    Cheers

Percentage of what? If you mean AQE score, then no. You can't easily make a connection with scores from year to year, as they are relative to the population of kids taking the tests.
If you want to guess your kid's rating then you'll be better off judging their performance against their peer group. If they are consistently above their peers, then no problem. Otherwise it's a bit of a lottery. The AQE system appears to be designed to squeeze lots of children into the 95/105 band, which (not coincidentally) is where most of the school admission borderlines fall.
  • Thanks RikM. Yes I'm trying to ascertain how my child's practice scores would translate to an actual aqe score. It's not very clear!

Sadly it is not and I am sure others will say the same thing
