Sold my Car and they paid me twice?

Hi All,
I recently sold my car to a well known quick car buying company. I have received 2 payments for the car, 1 cheque and one bacs , 2 x £5665.
I have contacted the company in question firstly via their Help section by email and then made 2 phone calls , 1 to the local franchise where I sold it and another to their head office and spoke to a manager.
All 3 correspondance were acknowledged and thanked me for my honesty.
2 weeks later nobody has contacted me to arrange payment back?? I feel I have done more than enough to correct their error.
They have all my contact details as the manager called me on my mobile.
How many more times are my expected to chase them to pay back "Their" money??.

Stick one of the payments into a savings account, leave it there and see what happens. It sounds like you've gone above and beyond to point out their error.
  • I know it's not my money, and I know they are entitled to it back but surely I shouldn't have to keep chasing a company waving their £5K at them?
I work 6 days a week office hours and used 2 full lunch breaks trying to sort it recently and just not prepared to keep doing it.

I assume the BACs arrived after you'd paid the cheque in?

So just do what Limey suggests...
  • I have, I just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced anything similar. Legally where do I stand?

Even though its their error, and you've tried to get them to collect it, they have 6yrs to collect it IIRC write a letter to HQ tell them of the error again then if they still don't collect moving it to a saving account to "gain" from it could be illegal as in the case of rhind v commercial bank of Scotland.

You've done your bit. Stick it in an instant excess ISA and let it earn a little bit of interest for you - won't be a lot at today's rates, but better than nothing, just! :)
If they ask for it back, repay them without any interest. If they don't, leave it there as a little nest egg for the future...

Legally, I guess they could ask for it back one day, even many years down the line. But realistically, it's a drop in the ocean to them and if they don't sort it out within say a year, I'd doubt if they'd come after it.
If you really wanted to know, you'd probably have to ask a solicitor. Some give an initial consultation for free, so it may only cost you the time.
