I can understand lpg's point of view but I believe the ability to work to the academic standard of a degree is necessary for teaching. It's the PGCE and NQT year that measure one's ability to communicate, manage people and resources and transfer the learning skills to the curriculum. And it doesn't end there as Performance Management is ongoing career long.

It does seem like a lot of jumping through hoops but it is designed so that those entrusted with children's learning have been assessed as being fit for purpose. I think that's essential. Imagine that I could pass myself off as a doctor because I've got a caring manner and reasonable knowledge from my science background, first aid courses and trips to the surgery! That's unthinkable and yet there are those who think anyone could walk into a classroom and be a teacher:mad:.

I do not think anyone can walk into a classroom and be a teacher, I also agree that potential teachers ought to be educated to degree level and complete a postgraduate teaching course. My jumping through hoops comment was more my frustration regarding what can and can't be done depending upon where one is qualified to teach, as a complete newbie to this, it all seems rather complicated.

On the subject of teaching I've read a very interesting and enlightening book over the last few days called 'Creating Tomorrow's Schools Today', really quite made me question what a school should be, what I want a school to be for my son and my own education.

You're quite welcome to the puppy, HBS. ;) She seems nothing short of a nightmare at the moment, I'm sure it'll get better but does remind me of when son was very young.

It will get better, promise - my mum used to puppy-walk for GDBA so I do know this. Give her lots of love, plus a good dose of training, and you'll have the best family companion you could wish for.

(What did you name her in the end?)

    She's called Issy.

I know it will get better, I'm just finding it difficult at the moment, Mrs. K. has basically signed out of any doggy duties and this just seems to be another one of those things my parents need to let me know how much better they are at than I. Their dog is an angel, of course. Don't suppose it's just the dog, I've had a bad week.

  • Chin up, you're doing so well. I feel very similar with my family as you do with yours. Issy is hard work now but who wants a dog that's an angel! I don't ;-)
  • You'll get there :) I have a friend who bought a chocolate lab puppy for her kids, around 8 months in there was a Facebook update that simply read 'Will someone please come and take this damn dog away???????!!!!!!!' They persevered and he's now a much-loved member of the family - she takes him on the afternoon school run and he sits on the back seat between the children and gives doggy cuddles if they've had a bad day.

    ourcornercottage / Caz: Thanks. :)

My cousin picked the quietest for my parents, perhaps that's made a difference?

Importantly my son adores her already. :) Just need to get through these first few months, I think.

  • Oh Alex lots of sympathy. We got ours just before DS was born. I remember clearing up dog puddles, clutching a newborn while the pup jumped on my head and bit my hair...

You're making me feel sick just thinking about it, smallholding. We don't do babies / young animals very well here!
