If the OP is visiting ex-pats who live abroad, he/she may have been given a shopping list of the foods they miss most.

British immigrants living abroad who love custard but can't buy custard powder could simply learn to make it... there can't be many places where you can't get eggs, milk, cream, sugar and vanilla.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

I love the smell of custard but can't stand to eat it.

When I worked in Nigeria, the eggs and sugar wouldn't have been a problem but the only milk available where I lived was the tinned condensed stuff and cream and vanilla would have been impossible to get.

Whenever I flew in, the contents of my suitcase would have been able to stock a small corner shop for a fair while, often having loads of cheese, bacon, packets of soup, and a fair bit of chilled fresh meat in a coolbag. (The majority of which was illegal to import into Nigeria but a small "dash" of $10 at customs always fixed the problem).

That's a recipe for creme anglaise. It is not the same thing as custard made from custard powder. For one thing, custard made from custard powder generally has no eggs in it. The Mr Bird (there really was one:)) who invented custard powder did so because his wife was allergic to eggs.

And that should be worth some QI points.:)

Home-made custard doesn't taste the same as Bird's.

Home-made is probably superior but, when it's a question of nostalgia, you want the taste of the original.

No M&S cotton knickers for the expat women?

When I was out there, some people came back from the UK with practically nothing but M&S underwear in their luggage!

Pack custard powder in suitcase and declare it if asked to do so in the food bit on the customs form.

Where I was working it was only expat men on "bachelor" postings. Many or the people were married but their wives didn't go out there so the M&S cotton knicks wouldn't have been much use. (although we did have a couple of male pilots who were a bit suspect and may well have worn them).

Put the sachets in a Tupperware box and then in your hold luggage. This will make sure it doesn't split and go everywhere. When I lived abroad I craved malt vinegar so friends would take the sachets from Wetherspoons for me as they were more practical than trying to get a bottle to me.

When visiting expat friends I've taken a suitcase if all sorts of random food. Weetabix, tea bags, walkers crisps, gravy granules, hot chocolate. Custard powder seems a reasonable thing to take someone.

I've also been known to take Tupperware on holiday with me to bring foreign things back in. Particularly useful for Istanbul and the spice market and curry ketchup sachets from Germany. I also have random sachets of things from Thailand and Japan that seemed like a good idea at the time but I now have no idea what they actually are!

I take vanilla flavored Jello in my cabin bag from the US to UK that is a fine powder no probs for years. The stuff that really gets them going is Spam in cans it must have a similar xray image as something nasty.
