Do you mean connecting a crossover ethernet patch cable between the two of them? That would be possible, but such cables are fairly rare.
Why not connect each desktop with an ordinary ethernet patch cable into an ethernet hub - conveniently that at the back of your router? Then it's just a matter of sharing the folders/directories you wish to access, setting up the same userid and password on each PC, and logging on using that userid/PC. Default the Workgroup to WORKGROUP - or whatever different name you're using.0 -
Quite probably yes - provides you say what you mean by 'cross-cabling'!

I do have a cross over cable knocking around
Its just that I don't want to connect the Xp desktop to the Internet, just access the adobe creative suite on it0 -
don't connect it up to the router then, though nothing bad will happen if you do.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

So you want to run software on machine A on machine B? or you want to copy files over?0 -

Can I use /access the adobe CS on the Xp desktop via the newer machine , the Xp machine not connected to the Internet , the new machine is...and would a cross over cable address this , or another way ..?
Thanks for replies so far, appreciated0 -
It's not clear what you want to do , but the whole xp on the internet thing is a red herring, it's not a problem, 20% of the worlds web users are using XP, even if it was, you could disconnect the router from the net using the routers web interface while you play around with adobe.
If you're not transferring files, just switch the old pc on and use adobe.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
Would Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe) work in this scenario?
OK, you'd need a user name and password on the XP machine but then accessing that via the newer machine would effectively bring the XP machine's desktop to the newer machine and allow the running of the Adobe software.PLEASE NOTE:

Apologies
Scenario
Xp desktop has adobe cs5 , new pc does not , without the need of buying adobe cs5 for new desktop , I would like to use the adobe cs5 which is on the xp desktop also on the new desktop , scare stories say do not connect Xp desktop to Internet as there is virtually no support , patches etc, so only want to use new desktop on the Internet , so via a cable connecting from the Xp desktop to the new pc , this can be achieved?0 -
Image the XP drive and run it a Virtual Machine on your new PC.
Google will provide all the answers to questions posed by that statement.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0
