... and discovered a half full bottle of water that I'd started drinking earlier in the day...or the airport security staff on duty that day just didn't care

It's silly that planes leaving the UK have this theatre of security, yet I hopped onto a plane from Dubai to London with a couple of water bottles by mistake. I pointed it out to the security guy, who suggested I put them in my hand luggage to go through the scanner! The rules are so unevenly applied and so arbitrary in a global sense... that it makes no sense...

Yea, on flights back to UK from Egypt and Tunisia we have taken water and bottles of coke through security. There were posters up saying that you couldn't, but again they were in our backpacks and had been forgotten.

You might be shocked to know you also need a passport and an airline ticket when flying. ;)

Surely you don't need these if you check in online!

Different flights/areas/countries have different threat risks.

when we arrived at the airport we
bought some bottled water from a
shop in the terminal then we fouind
we had to use security and were told
that no water was allowed as it was a
liquid. even thouh we checked in on-

over 100ml and had to throw two very
    expensive bottles of water away.

This has been the same since July 2005 (it started in the UK when the London bombs happened not 9/11). You've had over 9 years to learn this. Every Airport in the UK also has umpteen signs up in the shops landslide telling you this.

This is no one's but your own fault.

Basically, learn to read and don't shout scam just because you missed the obvious that everyone else knows and the also hundreds of warnings you would have had beforehand via signage.
