Riddle #2 is an easy one (but only because I saw it a few months ago!).

Aviation quiz Part 2. (and again, no Googling the answer)

    A two part question.
What is the largest aircraft ever to have flown and what is the largest aircraft ever to have flown with fare paying passengers on board?

The largest plane -- was it Howard Hughes Spruce Goose ?
Largest aircraft with paying passengers - Has that Antanov 225 ever taken paying punters ?
  • Wrong with both answers!

    OK

without resrting to Google, I've now got an airship feeling - but I don't know which one/s. :D
  • Correct.
It was the Hindenburg. There were actually two Hindenburgs built but only one carried fare paying passengers.

You have to be careful when writing that particular question, making sure that you specify aircraft and not aeroplanes or airplanes.

depends how you want to define 'largest'.
    Overall length x width?
    Fuselage volume?
    Load (weight) carrying capacity?
    or what?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Largest is generally accepted to be the biggest size, and the Hindenburg easily meets this requirement being over 3 times longer than a 747 and well over twice the height.

Even if you don't want general dimensions but volume, there is no argument that the Hindenburg still meets this requirement.
The overall volume of the structure was about 140 times that of a 747. (and still many times greater in all respects compared to an A380, the Spruce goose or an An 225)

The load carrying capacity of any vehicle has nothing to do with its size.

I must be the worst parent on the board. I've sent my children across Canada as unaccompanied minors. Paid a fee of $25 per child, airline hung ID cards around their neck and seated them on the aisles. One was five, the other eight.

They still as adult men talk about the flight. One was sat next to an off duty cop and the other one a nun.

Nobody vomited, nobody got lost. They got delivered to the grandparents at the other end. No passengers felt that they had been put upon. In fact the cop spoke to my parents when they were signing for the boys and told them what great kids they were.

You paid and no one was inconvenienced, you're a responsible courteous parent :T:T

It is not my place to judge, but that seems awfully young to me to fly alone. I wonder, would they, as adults, do this with their own children?
