Never paid and travelled abroad at least twice a year, every year, with a now 12 and 9 year old. Our party of 4 have only ever been split 2 in one row and 2 in another on the odd occasion. Never one alone. No problem there! Never even needed to ask at check-in either to my recollection. Seats have been automatically allocated in a sensible fashion. However I would always check my seat numbers at check in to make sure. I have been sat with my own child and someone elses on a row of 3 when their parents has been over the aisle. Always an older child (say 8 or above). I don't mind this at all. Give me that over someone with a toddler on the lap or a large space invader! Parents get stung by school holiday prices as it is and I refuse to pay more and there has never been an occasion where I wished I had done!
You're like me though - our kids are older. Things have changed so much in the last 5 years in regard to paying to prebook seats.
When mine were little, it wasn't an issue about airlines sitting parents apart from their kids as it wasn't a money maker then.
It wasn't an issue when I sat apart from the kids this summer as we were upgraded (for free :T) to business class - we were a whole cabin apart as business was across 2 cabins. They were 8 and 9. I didn't mind not sitting with them, but were they 4 and 5, it would have been completely different.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

So you're wrong then, your assigned seat can be changed
Ok then
I'll bite.
I've got a 100%, coppor bottomed, guaranteed way to ensure that not only will I never be moved from my seat by a steward, but I'll also be able to choose exactly the seat that I want to be in and the likes of YOU can whine and whimper about it as much as you like, but you can't do ANYTHING about it.0 -

Be the pilot :rotfl:That was too easy!
Being the pilot won't guarantee that a steward won't get you removed from your seat.A Flybe flight was cancelled at the last minute on Wednesday when the pilot was arrested on suspicion of being drunk.
A member of cabin crew reported their colleague, who was removed from the plane just before take-off and breathalysed.
Passengers who had boarded the Newquay-Gatwick flight were delayed by up to five hours and in some cases missed onward connections.
A Flybe spokesman said: "Flybe can confirm that one of its pilots volunteered to help the police with their inquiries at Newquay Airport yesterday.0 -

Hell fire - have people had a collective sense of humour failure today.
Even being one of the people running the airline didn't help this woman.. Although she did manage to get the steward kicked off the flight first0 -

Not even.

This is my opinion on the matter, The airline should make provisions to make sure that a 4 year old is sat next to at least one of its parents. They know when the op booked and paid for the tickets so the system could flag that the child needs to be sat next to parent A or B but if seats are tight and people are paying for then the other parent could be moved to allow for other paying passengers.
And comparing a paying adult who chooses to pay due to a fear of flying etc is not the same a 4 year old child IMO.0
