I would recommend you try oil and don't be afraid of using plenty so it really moisturizes the skin and leave it on for some time. However begin with a small amount to see how you respond. Then use a paper towel and dab the skin to remove the excess oil and shine. That works very well for me as it can barely be seen, more of a nice healthy glow rather than a bright shine and the skin seems far more "normal".

You can buy oils online here are a couple of places, however I have not yet ordered from either. I am considering doing so when I can find some time.

http://www.naturallybalmy.co.uk/ this site sells them in small 50ml sizes as a minimum.

I like Rosehip oil. Hazelnut is okay but I moved away from that to Rosehip. Jojoba oil I was not keen on and almond oil made my face sting, especially after shaving. Coconut oil is okay and nice as a barrier but does not sink in very well. I love the smell of coconut & oil!

I would recommend that you look what is available and read up on them to find out their effects. Tamanu Oil sounds interesting.

One thing I wanted to ask about face oils is will it tend to bring out quite a few spots as someone has said to me that it doesnt allow the skin to breathe much.
I have also seen this rosehip oil, what do people think?

In answer to your questions: I have very very fickle skin, I get spots with most skin creams because my skin is so fickle. It acts as if it likes, LOVES a product...at first. Then almost without warning after about 10-14 days; spots, and about one a day, these aren't like normal spots, they are deeply inside my skin whiteheads which are painful to not pick but too deep to pick and they scar with a red blot on my skin for months and months after they've gone even if I don't pick them. I get these from products with too many man-made ingredients in, price doesn't seem to be a factor- I've had them from a sample of Crème de Mer I've tried, from Boots No.7, from Johnsons, Lancôme, Superdrug's line, Aldi's line...
I have not had spots from facial oils.

I would also suggest looking at oils which have been refined for facial skin, if you get a general all-purpose (all purpose meaning skin, body, nails, hair...etc) your more likely I would have thought to run in to problems. I would not expect the hair on my head to be as delicate as the skin on my face. I would not expect the skin on my body to require as much moisture as the skin on my face (or at least not the same type of product) but that's just me.

I have though yet to try a pure oil and have really just stuck to products I feel have been treated to become facial oils because my skin is too fickle for me to mess it around. I have tried a few brands but found Kiehl's to be the one which I liked the most. There are a vast amount of facial oils out there and one which works for me may not work for you so do try a few samples here and there if you can or at least purchase from somewhere you can take back the product if it doesn't work for you (ask about this first) most reputable brands do offer this, if your unsure, ask first.

Always look at the ingredients first to make sure your happy with what's in it, I would suggest using only at night for a week or two to make sure your happy with it. Some facial oils are also not meant for the day but do mean as your skin feels more supple after using it, that you can get away with something far lighter during the day as a result.

Well anything can give people spots, different people s skin reacts to different ingredients in certain ways. For example, coconut oil can cause some people to break out in spots, but for some people it is brilliant and causes no bad effects (me included!). Jojoba could be a good place to start but you can always patch test first.

Secondly, skin "breathing" is a myth :)
    No more goo hoarding!

Ahhh! I'm one of those that gets spots with anything which has coconut oil in! I can tolerate it in my hair (but can't use it as it leeches colour) love the scent too but just doesn't work for me. Jojoba and Shea oil based products are good though- they are great for very dry skin but not to be used every day IME as they can be quite rich if you have fickle skin; though maybe that's just me...
  • have you tried the simple skincare range thats cheap and has no stuff in to irritate skin
  • The French pharmacy ranges can be very good for dry/sensitive skin.

La Roche Posay/Avene, there are various others. They are often on 3 for 2 at Boots, or currently 1/3 off at Escentual.com.
If you don't like the idea of an oil you could also try a hydrating serum underneath your moisturiser.

Unfortunately the only thing to do is bite the bullet and keep trying things until you find something that works. Try and keep a note of what you try though, you might be able to start pin pointing certain ingredients your skin doesn't like. Lots of people find shea butter gives them spots fro example.

You should drink maximum water in a day.
Actually dry skin and dehydrated skin are two different things, it's normally lack of oils which affect the skin rather than water (Although both will affect skin) added to this the pollution, drying things like air-conditioning, the weather and products used which can be drying, then there is stress and hormonal things like age, additives in food, sugar and other refined foods and so on.

I have very dry skin to the point where my cheeks used to crack in winter, the followinf is the only regime I have found to keep it okay.

Elemis cleansing balm, elemis sensitive toner, decleor neroli oil and decleor face cream. Although recently i have changed my cream to l'occitane shea butter and it has gone very well.

I've seen Argan oil moiserizer in Poundland so you could try that one, my mum has used it and said its really nice :)

I second this, I have been using PURE coconut oil for about 2 weeks now, inspired by this post and my skin looks and feels in a better condition that it ever has. I use it at night.
