OP, you need to use something on your face that contains no mineral oils. There are oil-free products available on the market so use them for now. Avoid anything overly cosmetic or that is marketed with wild claims, and exfoliate regularly. Your skin will clear up so don't lose hope.

(Advice given as someone who both suffers(/ed?) from and still routinely treats acne. People think I've got amazing skin but nothing could be further from the truth).

Hi OP! I also had - note had - dry skin on my face. I bought Avon Reversalist pack for £10 to try. Day and night cream, eye cream and a facial wash. Wow what a difference! I bought a small exfoliating sponge from Boots and I used it with the face wash. Also use it dry on the skin t get rig of the dry bits I got whilst my skin regenerated itself.

Now I haven't a flaky patch in sight. My skin is still dry - but not at all flaky. Also used when the Avon stuff runs out or isn't on offer is Olay Total effects day & night.

I also use some Argan oil (not the real stuff but a small pot from Home Bargains) and that really works for me.
  • I suffer from dry facial skin too and if you find the creams don't work, you should try an oil. You can go for something expensive like Orange Facial Oil from Neals Yard Remedies (about £25) but a little goes a long way. Or you could just try base oils like Jojoba oil that are a few pounds in a health food shop.

The main things with oils is to just use a few drops - not lashings and it should not grease you up.
  • I'm another one with very sensitive skin -
Clinique dramatically different moisturiser is great- so soothing when you apply it and very moisturising without feeling greasy.
It's the only one I've tried that I never get a reaction to.

Its not cheap - but if you buy the pump bottle it lasts for months and months, and don't be put off by the bright yellow colour ;)

    Hi
I wanted to say thanks for all the great advice so far, I would love to try some of the more expensive options like dermalogica but it's out of my price range.
I like the idea of an oil but as I have quite dark skin I didn't want an oil to burn or darken my skin in the summer months.
I am thinking of trying the eucerin replenishing dry skin cream but am still undecided.
I tried the boots botanics cream today and it was far too greasy.

It's very unlikely a facial oil will make the sun burn your face (unless you opt for cooking oil, facial oils are not made in the same way ;)) A good facial oil for dry skin is rose oil and Almonds and vitamin E are also good for dry skin. Weleda are a fairly priced brand for this http://www.weleda.co.uk/face/icat/face&itemsperpage=9&isviewall=1 Jason Organics, Body Shop (the latter will give you samples to try first if you ask nicely) and Kiehl's (who will also give samples if you make it clear your interested in eventually buying something ;))

Please don't be afraid of oils- they wont turn you in to a chip pan! Also, if you can try to find a replenishing night cream solely for use at night this could help. Try to look for an SPF separate to your skin care because there is rarely enough SPF protection in a moisturiser. Always apply the SPF first to your skin, allow it to sink in and react with your skin to start it working. Then apply your moisturiser and your good to go. If your especially worried about skin darkening, you will need an SPF protection and try to keep out of the sun/wear a hat. If it is very sunny, you will need to re-apply the SPF (and then moisturiser!) during the day if your outside in the sun all day.

And exfoliate once a week- this gets rid of any build up of products and dirt which can dry out your skin and make it look dull.

I purchased the Eucerin Replenishing Face Cream yesterday from Boots and this is another cream I can discard. The cream is non greasy which is good but I didnt feel like it left my skin moisturised enough and also left my skin with a burning sensation.

Jenni I think I will have to look into the fascial oils as I have spent alot of money on creams now and nothing seems to be working very well.
Is there an oil specifically for men that you would recommend?

If you can afford it. Kiehl's have a really nice one. With facial oils you need to give your skin time to adapt to them, Initially they take a good 10 minutes for your skin to take in the moisture and not look shiny. After the first few days or so you need less time than 10 minutes, best to use these at night to begin with as they can be quite different to a normal moisturiser which often leaves skin with a matt surface and with some they are designed for night time only.

There are cheaper facial oils out there, but IME Kiehls is the best I've tried- they often will have samples to try, give it a week before you choose to discard anything- it takes your skin time to adapt to whatever your using.

Don't forget to cleanse and tone (to get rid of the debris) especially if you've found the current moisturiser too greasy or you'll end up with a build up and spots. Same goes with any moisturiser, cream, lotion or oil. Many people forget this and then feel worried when they get dead skin. A toner will make a difference if you use it every day- try it for a week or two and if it's not helping then dump it but tbh I've never not noticed a difference.
  • I would try the body shop vitamin E facial oil, its quite light but very moisturising, not too expensive either

Just a thought if you are worried about using oil on your face during the day, use your normal face moisturiser but add a drop or two of oil into it in the morning and use the oil alone at night, use sparingly, a little goes a long way :)
