Belated happy birthday Ivy and congrats softstuff.
I too watched the victorian slum 2nd episode yesterday, once the power came back on - it gave me a real insight into the mentality of those living there - I think in my head I'd always thought those running the stores and the wee sweatshops were to be despised, but hearing the shop owners talk about how they rent their home and premises and need to balance giving credit with keeping themselves afloat, and the tailor's wife rallying the kids for cheap labour just to keep a roof and crust for her own family - well it certainly makes you think, and puts your own challenges in proportion!
Someone mentioned earlier a book called Round about a Pound a Week - I have it too and it's really interesting reading, and the threads running through it are echoed by the programme - particularly families trying to set aside a little for christian burial for the many children in each family who didn't survive out of infancy.
It's all food for thought

I think the poor were always poor, and have never had a chance to get out of poverty until recently. And this might change now with the zero hours contracts etc.0

Hi Monna.
My doggy guest has arrived, he has cried, paced, farted and panted for the last hour, I hope he calms down soon or it's going to be a bloody long week!Chin up, Titus out.0 -
Hi monnagran! I hope you're enjoying yourself. Missing your posts! xx
Hester Oh dear, I hope he settles down for you! I think the doggy farts are the worst.....
I need to buy a new bra today. The last batch were from M & S and are a very good fit, so I'm really hoping they still do the same style, though it won't be easy to find one particular style in the Bluewater store; there are hundreds of the things. And it gets very tiring trying them on, especially as the straps always need adjusting.0 -
Hope you manage to find what you are looking for ivyleaf, I can never get the same bra twice from M&S, should really buy more when I find one I like.
Missing you monna - have a good time.
Woke up this morning, made a pot of tea and went back to bed to watch a programme on catch up, felt really wrong but I thoroughly enjoyed it! I'll make the most of it as I'm back at work next week.
How do you do all this manual work Softstuff? I aerated the grass yesterday (not a big bit of grass) with a garden fork and have 2 blisters!0 -
Morning all,
I've handed in the index, just squeaking in under the deadline Weds night and then promptly succumbed to an awful cold.
Ivy, I hate trying on bras esp. because the straps always need adjusting. If you know the style and size perhaps try to see if you can find them online? They can usually be returned to the shop if they don't suit. I've also had good luck taking in the exact style name and number as M&S have those electronic lookup things (very technical term!) and so staff can help direct.
Monna, nice to see your ghostly presence0 -
I feel your pain with the bra issues. I am a fairly unusual size (small, not big - 36B) and they are hard to get. i am also fussy about the type - not wanting satin or lace or plunging this or balcony that. But not too plain or 'old granny' looking either.I wanna be in the room where it happens0

One thing about being small is that i shouldn't get to that stage - though even fried eggs can slide....
