I care how I look, it's just that generally there's not much I can do about it. I'm allergic to make up, hair dye (even the organic kind) is no good for me, I'm pasty white and covered in spots (caused by medicating another issue) and my weight is ever changeable. I'm also generally dressed more for gardening than anything else and can't wear high heels, slim trousers or dresses (tumour in leg) or strappy tops (giant bra!). I think what bothers me about it is the lack of choice in the matter, if you see what I mean. I don't think I'm that shallow, I dont tend to judge others on appearance, I just think of my own.

Reading the news, Ms Kardashian getting robbed (poor woman, no one deserves being robbed and tied up at gunpoint), my biggest surprise was the value of the jewellery... $14 million AUD. If I wandered around with a thousandth of that, I'd worry about being robbed.with that much, she doesn't need a body guard, she needs her own army.

  • Americans are sick to death of hearing about KK. But this getting robbed at gun point is just awful. Why on earth does she not have body guards!
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Apparently she had 1. The securicor vans that pick up shop takings around here have 2 armed guards in combat gear and you can bet they're carrying nowhere near that value of change.

    .

    Well said Softstuff. :T

I don't know how "judging" came into this.

I know I just think of my own and want to be the best I personally can be - that self-respect again:)

Judging came into the discussion because I put my point of view across - I now don't care about what people think of how I look because I have realised that when I did it was because I had very little confidence growing up in an environment where people judged, mocked and came up with little scenarios about why people would wear/look like they did for people's amusement.

That point of view surfaced because you MITSTM suggested that people around you look older then they are and you compared them to yourself. You commented on their appearance. Your post reminded me of my family growing up.
  • Fuddle - it's been very clear for a while that you don't like me personally. I have bitten my tongue many times over the years at not saying anything personal against you and I would appreciate if you could accord me the same courtesy and not take everything I say the wrong way.

Ignore button might be useful for both of you and avoid the thread getting sidetracked or derailed as has happened in the past.

A change of subject, since I didn't mean to be contentious.

Garage doors. We're looking at a garage door, does anyone have a motorised one? Am I being a needlessly wasteful and not O/S? Or should I embrace technology that allows us to get into the garage bone dry on a rainy day?

  • Just dashing out but thought I'd pop in to say good morning!

Softstuff, I often think the line isn't 'is it really OS' but 'is it something that will give me value for money.' They can be useful--my grandmother likes them on safety grounds--i.e. you open it from inside the car with headlamps on, drive in, close it and get out and know no one has snuck in. That probably wouldn't occur to me as a concern, but I might consider it on the grounds of how much pleasure it would give me on a cold winter night :D. Mum and dad have one, and I must say as they get older I think it is useful. Dad is now in a wheelchair so can't operate it manually and it is one less physical thing around the house mum has to do. If I were preparing a house for my retirement/long term living I'd consider it on those grounds too.

You need to think about value, not cost Softstuff. That's how you make the right decisions on where to spend money.
