Fuddle I forgot to mention that Marmite is good for B12, and cornflakes and rice crispies are fortified with vitamins too. Also, as Nursemaggie says, vitamin D from sunshine & fresh air are as good for you as anything in a jar.

Keep your eyes open for ripe elderberries to make elderberry syrup - a small shot glass taken each morning in late autumn/winter helps protect against colds. You just heat up the berries in water with a few cloves added then strain the liquid and add honey to taste.

Hi all , agree with nursemaggie , a diet high in fruit and veg , pulses, fresh air and light exercise, and not to buy vitamins proven not to make any difference. Anything you will do will take time to achieve full effect .

Hope everyone has had a nice easy long weekend , I had today off :j worked two shift from hell on sat and sun afternoon to midnight ....very very busy ,good fun but *** can people drink , don't know where they put it all ,then back the next day yikes... had "elvis" in the building yesterday , i am not an elvis fan, but he was good and great fun, lots in ,mixed ages and the best bit was he was a very nice person ,polite and friendly, sometimes "artists" act like they are Hollywood stars and forget that politeness cost's nothing but goes so far ....

Back to the proper job tomorrow , last week of holidays for the kids, all school stuff now bought except one pair of trainers , think so far 2 kids stuff = £ 290 ....hey ho , now I remember why I do 3 jobs
    £223/ £250 GC
  • Yay, glad to hear you are on the mend Fuddle.
Last day of the holidays for me, back to the grind tomorrow.
I was so excited a while ago, I thought I was going to be able to retire in 2017, when I double checked the figures hubby had given me he has missed lots of living costs out of the final total, I shall now be working for another 3-5 years, I'm so upset.
Some good news for me though, hubby's friend has found a flat and will receive £100,000 death in service payment as his partner died so young. It's a sad way to receive money, but it takes the pressure off us.
    Chin up, Titus out.

Oh Hester, I'm really sorry to hear you'll have to work longer than you'd thought, especially when you're so desperate to be shot of the place ((HUGS))

Very glad though that OH's friend won't need to move in with you after all!
  • Morning all,

Hester I'm sorry about the bad news about your retirement date. I am relieved to hear that your houseguest now has a new arrangement. I don't know how you keep going.

    Burthayou must be exhausted!

I don't think too much about boosting the immune system, more focusing on making sure it has the resources it needs. We probably rely a bit too heavily on aubergines, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and courgettes for our veg, but we do have spinach and or broccoli once or twice per week and a couple of servings of fruit each per day. I think soups are really key.

I only take two supplements, and I don't think they're a panacea. I take a b complex throughout the year because my diet likely doesn't provide enough of b12 in particular. I probably get enough one to two days per week, but the other days I'm not eating enough of the right foods to make up more than half of my requirements. In the winter I also supplement vitamin D, and if we have a very rainy stretch in the summer then I'll take some for a few days then as well. The D supplementation seems to be in line with the current advice. Neither costs me very much.

Yesterday's jam is lovely. I only got four jars, although I'm relieved to report that I did not overboil it as I first feared. I also got six more tins of kidney beans while out. I've just had word that one of my work deadlines is being moved up, so I'm going to take the rest of this week off and get on top of household things in preparation for what is about to be a very busy period. Unfortunately I've irritated my chest muscle again in the garden yesterday, so there will be a few things I need to go gently with.

I did give OH a bread lesson yesterday. He makes pizza, so the steps are similar but it just takes practice to get it down.

Hugs to all who need them.x

HH what a blow for you. I am so sorry.

I have a chutney in the slow cooker. It looks very wet. Has anyone done this before? I was thinking 12 hours. If it works then I can make different sorts...I no longer have the inclination to stand over the cooker so I'm trying this . This is green tomato.
  • Tired Trophey, I've never made chutney before but I wouldn't have pegged the slow cooker as a great way to go about it since it needs to reduce significantly and the slow cooker tends to retain the liquid. I'd probably let it simmer for the 12 hours or so and then put it on the hob to reduce it down. Someone else is bound to know for certain! Let us know how it turns out!
  • My sympathies as well Hester re that postponed retirement date. I believe you're already working on beyond 60 - so that is one heck of a blow to get a bit more added on.

Hope hubbie ran off for a break fast enough (for his sake...) to give you time to calm down after news like that...

Hope you can manage to find a way to resolve this or find strength to cope if you can't.

I know I was basically literally counting the days for some time before I got out the door at 60 on the dot (or, to be more precise, a few months before my birthday). I was so desperate to go that I saved up all the holiday possible to have it in the period leading up to that birthday - in order to get out asap.

I guess the only consolation I can think of is that are some of us are too "young" (of ourselves) to retire in some ways - and you might have found yourself looking for something "work-like" iyswim to occupy part of your time???

But I do know how "tired" one gets come the end (or what you thought would be the end....) of one's worklife if doing a job one hates just for the sake of the money.

Fingers crossed things will work out better than you fear. Thank goodness for one positive thought - ie hubby's mate no longer going to come and live with you anyrate.
