Knowing what so many young people prefer I think the noodles will go down well. I suspect mine would ask me to move to uni with him he likes my cooking.

DS is currently looking at ways of educating himself for free. He is still searching for someone to teach him Japanese. He has told me today he knows a guy in Australia who works from home for an American company translating thing from Japanese who like DS is self taught from a young age. He showed them the Anime he had translated and the manger. Trouble is Virgin will not give the upload speed he needs if he goes back to translating anime. We can only get 3 meg with BT.

Nursemaggie, although Duolingo don't have a Japanese course yet, there's some advice here for those wanting to learn it.

  • Nursemaggie,

He might check meetup.com to see if there is a Japanese language group near you. I haven't seen one in Manchester, only French but I haven't been looking ;). I think you usually have to pay a one off £1 fee if you want to go along to any meetup events, but after that it should be either free or just the cost of a drink if they are using a cafe to meetup.

I doubt there is a Japanese course this way, but he could also try googling "Free MOOCS UK" which are large courses at Universities that offer their lectures for free online. Some also have a certificate component, although some also charge a fee. I haven't ever taken one, but a few of the lecturers I know have had their lectures used for this purpose. If I had the free time I'd look into it for creative writing as I think it is a fab way to learn things!

Thank you Softstuff and FPk I will show him what you have both sent.

I think the Language groups are usually for practicing a language you are learning with a native speaker. We were in a Japanese restaurant in Piccadilly, in London not Manchester, a few years ago and two young women came to the table next to us. I asked DS why the Japanese girl spoke in English and the the American spoke in Japanese and he said they would belong a language group so they could meet native speakers of the language they were learning.

I don't think DS is ready for that his Japanese is very much at middle school language not at all adult. He has to use subtitles for films. He watches Japanese TV but he can never translate for me. He actually needs some formal adult lessons so he can get some qualifications. It has mainly been learned from children's television manga and anime.

FPk I think your MOOCS may be what he is looking for for computer stuff. I have a feeling I will be asked for £250 for a very well know (among computer geeks) Uni level text book on computing if he does not get another job soon. There is nothing going and DWP are ignoring him again so I can't see him getting any money for a while.

  • Morning all,

OH and I are going to head out for a short local walk this morning and then I'll have to work out what to do for this weekend. I have ironing, jam making and sewing to do but as we have sunshine today I might try and find something to do in the garden.

Nursemaggie, autumn is a good time to find lightly used discounted textbooks, so maybe your son will get lucky. He may be able to find it on amazon or abebooks. They tend to list a big stock of used stuff in the autumn, both because they save up what students sold in spring and a lot of students try to flog the previous year's texts to help pay for this year (a technique I used myself). If he knows of any local Unis that use it as their main text for a course he may also try posting on the noticeboards asking to buy.

Hugs to all who need them.x
  • My L&M had to work this morning for a couple of hours so I dropped him off and went to the local shops, I only spent about £10 and it will last us the week as I'm running my freezers down.
I've cleared some rubbish from the garden and sent a photo of stuff hubby is getting rid of to a friend who might want it, if not it will be binned.

DD2 phoned from her holidays to ask if I could collect the 2 older DGD's from school for 2 weeks starting 6th Sept. She works locally on a Saturday and would like to work there full time she has been asked to cover 2 weeks holiday but as it's only 2 weeks she will have to do her other night job at the same time, her sister is looking after the littlest DGD as I will be at work.

I got up last night around 2am to go to the toilet (oh the joys of old age) and when I went back to bed the bloody dog was asleep on my pillow, I was too befuddled to work out how to move her so I slept in the spare room, I must be mad.
    Chin up, Titus out.

Hester DDog obviously has its feet on your bed as well as under the table!

When we had our cats we always left a bowl of water outside the back door, for them and for "passing trade". I continued leaving it out after we lost our last cat, but the last time I brought it indoors to give it a good scrub I didn't get around to putting it back out.
Yesterday morning I had the back door ajar. The grey cat from over the back put his head round it, caught my eye, walked in small circles round the area where the bowl had been, then sat down beside the empty space in a very pointed fashion.
I filled the bowl and put it back out, and he had a looong drink :D

    That's me told then!
